My turn for a front door dilemma!
Need a new front door as mine has had it. It’s draughty, cold and rotting in places. Looking at Solidor Composite Doors but am in a bit of a dither over the colour. One minute I like something pale and interesting and other times a bold peacock only will do! House is a red brick 1930s terrace with a brick arch. Here’s some samples of what I may choose as a guide.

Comments (9)HI -- gross635 -- Your right to some degree but you can't move the main floor bath to the other side because then that interfers with the floor plan on the second floor. Would not work . I would have loved to turn the whole plan around but it won't work in this case. Added note to what I posted before is to get rid of anywalls you don't need and also not every room has to have a door. Like the one on the lounge and the one at the end of the hall. I would open the lounge up by not having the walls on the entrance hall . As for a closet , there is space in front of the set back powder room for some coat hooks etc. I also question the fact of , if the lounge is really needed. Everything could have been shifted to the front and the kitchen set back , then that would have made a larger dining/familyroom area . But that would have ruined the resale value . So I think moving the bathrooms was the lest and best for this plan. One question I have , is this an English plan ?, because the English love putting doors on every room ?And usually the doors swing the wrong way....See MoreMake my room more family friendly

As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Comments (9)Hi Kate, you may not be allowed to plaster the dash as sometimes house fronts are protected. For colour try Indian yellow from Farrow and Ball. This strong colour is associated with your style of house and has the advantage or drawing the attention away from the dash and onto the lighter colours. ie. windows and doors. 3 months agoThank you all for your brilliant comments. I drove round the roads in town to see what others have done. Fantastic examples. I love the house number etched in the top glass that a lot of people have so that’s a definite. My current door is painted in F&B Cooks Blue so I think I like bold colours. The front is NE facing so bright sunshine in the morning and then shady later on. Lots of bluebells in the front garden in the spring. These are old, not very good, pictures of the old door.

3 months agoI feel your pain! I really like your current door colour. You actually recommended my current door colour of a Little Greene Celestial Blue - photo below. It now needs redoing and although I love it, I’m half tempted by the lovely yellow that Jonathan suggested. Good luck - let us know what you eventually choose!

3 months agoHi macbroom, my very tiny hall is painted pale grey with a very colourful striped carpet. Inside will be white. Im getting more and more drawn to Twilight Grey (see below). Decision day tomorrow!
Grainne do you mean number 2 in the original post? Lovely soft shade but I’m getting more drawn to bolder shades. Making decisions are so hard for me. How do people remodel a whole house I’ll never know! 😊
Loki the windows are white. I’ve spotted a lovely front door in my road in a blue and it does look lovely with the white windows. Front doors are so expensive. I’ve been quoted £1995 so far but got another chap quoting tomorrow.
