“We highly recommend architect Bruce Butler of By Design. He has been wonderful to work with, and we are delighted with our new home. We had never built a house before--nor did we think it was in the cards for us to do so--so we were complete novices when we began. Bruce was very patient with our lack of knowledge and did an excellent job of educating us on the process. Based on information he gathered from us, he presented us with an initial plan that matched our vision! After that, our discussions with him were primarily regarding materials and finishes. Our dealings with Bruce were done from a distance as we lived a half-dozen states away from our building site. Regardless of this, the process was seamless. Bruce also effectively acted on our behalf with the town Planning Board and Code Enforcement Officer. Without making a single change, they signed off on our plans the very night he presented them. He also participated in our meetings with prospective builders and made field trips to see their work. Additionally, he was very proactive on pursuing cost- and energy-saving options. We interviewed other architects before selecting Bruce. After the fact, one of the other firms asked us whom we selected. We told them and they said, "Bruce does great work, I think you'll be in good hands." There’s no question that we were!”

“We used Lauren for a complete remodel including kitchen, multiple bathrooms, playroom, and bedroom. We used her for complete architectural and interior design. She was with us from start to finish of the project and we owe the success to her. Lauren has great design skills which is completely obvious by viewing her portfolio. The equally as helpful (and likely more important) skills that she brings to the table are her attention to detail and her perseverance in dealing with the contractors. She is there at every meeting to crack the proverbial whip and is very responsive (NYC responsive ;) to email/ phone/ text. I have and will continue to recommend her without reservation.”
BRIBURN – Architecture for Life

“We took on Briburn for a substantial new residential project on the basis of their website and their stated philosophy, and a 2 hour interview/discussion. As our first and only choice, they clearly stood out among a dozen other architects in the area. We are in the midst of planning now and the process is almost painless. Their guidance is gentle and considerate; their knowledge of "green" building practices is vast. I'm eagerly looking forward to the next steps in this adventure with Briburn.”

“Review for Chris Delano - Art of Space Chris did a wonderful job designing our new lake house so that views of the lake can be seen from our main living areas including the master bedroom. We were pleased with his creative ideas which included the use of upper windows that allow extra light to filter in throughout the day. He not only was the architect but was involved in the management of the project. Chris was excellent to work with and he and the general contractor worked very well together. Chris is a gifted architect and a man of integrity.”

“Mottram Architecture is the reason our remodel is so functional still till this day. She took the time to listen to our ideas, asked numerous questions, and really got a feel for what we wanted out of the project. Then took our old farm house and walked us through several different design possibilities which incorporated new ideas and thoughts. Much of this helped us understand what we wanted out of each area and how much space we truly wanted in each room. Mottram Architecture helped throughout the project answering questions that the contractors had. We are thoroughly happy with the finished product. The functional use of space and getting what you want out of a project even when you might not know exactly what you want is the reason we would use Mottram Architecture again and recommend using them for a remodel or new build.”

“John designed our lakefront 2nd home, now ten years+ years ago and I can say without reservation, that his final product has delighted us ever since. His combination of professional experience in both large firm design, woodframe construction techniques, and an ability to grasp our intentions early on, allowed us to achieve our goals. We got great design, an efficient process, and with costs that reflected excellent value. Our comfortable home has at least seven locations-from a cozy reading nook to a breakfast bench that bring smiles every sitting! His practical oversight during construction ,together with his ability to relate to rural craftsman helped keep any cost related changes to a minimum.”

“Travis designed our waterfront home in Yarmouth, Maine. Throughout the process, he was absolutely terrific to work with. We’d hire him again in a heartbeat. We started with several meetings to talk about general style, size, and specific features we wanted. His first task was to help us decide whether to build on the footprint of the existing home within 75’ of the shore or build back behind the 75’ line. Here, he helped us with general siting and overall budget considerations – sifting through zoning constraints and what he was hearing from us to return a few exterior sketches with corresponding rough layouts. This helped us decide to build on the footprint of the existing structure – and from there we worked from these originals over the course of eight weeks, with the final result being a set of construction documents and specifications that our builder used to price the home and proceed with the build. Throughout the process he was open to our ideas, conscientious of our budget, and willing to produce multiple options to address different design considerations. He was willing to hand off segments of the detail work to our builder to enable us to save money, but was always available for a consult or visit when we or our builder had questions. Travis is fun to be around, knowledgeable about building options and materials, consistently on time and followed through, doing what he said he’d do time and time again. The result is an absolutely gorgeous home that we will raise our family in – all delivered by our builder within 3% of our original budget and on exactly the timeframe estimated. If we ever have reason to build anything again, Travis will be our first and only call.”

“We recently had the great pleasure of working with Rob Whitten and Russ Tyson from Whitten Architects, who designed our new seaside family cottage, boathouse and cabin, to replace a quaint, rustic, deteriorating cottage that had been in the family for decades. The old cottage was the original structure in a larger family compound, and served as the focal point for extended family gatherings over the years. It was important to us that a new cottage reflect the character and charm of the original building, while creating a more comfortable, durable, and efficient living space. We also wanted to take advantage of the panoramic view of the Bay, while fitting in unobtrusively with surrounding homes. We could not be happier with the results. Rob, Russ and colleagues have extensive experience designing beautiful camps and cottages in spectacular locations, one reason we were drawn to their firm for our project. In Whitten Architects we found not only this design expertise, but partners with whom it was a pleasure to work through every phase of the project. From the beginning we identified a team approach among architect, client and contractor as very important to us, especially since our property was so far away from Portland. Always thoughtful and responsive, with an appreciation for fine detail, Rob and Russ collaborated sensitively and effectively with us and with our builder. It was gratifying to experience. We are delighted with our beautiful new cottage, which is well suited to our lifestyle, sited perfectly to take advantage of its location, and works in relationship to attractive and functional new outbuildings. Natural lighting and excellent ventilation bring the outdoors in, creating a cozy, yet open feel in a home that is efficient, sustainable, and economical to operate. Rob and Russ also contributed to the landscape design, which enhances and brings a sense of completion to the project. We give Whitten Architects our most enthusiastic endorsement, and are especially grateful to Rob Whitten and Russ Tyson for their outstanding work.”
