Making the Best of a Forgotten Space
Close to the opposite corner of the house is a small, informal patio.
The patio floor is laid with open jointed, irregular fieldstone. The open joints are planted with an assortment of low profile, low maintenance perennials and herbs. These "filler" plants are selected for both their tolerance of hot, dry conditions and their tolerance of light foot traffic. Some of the herbs, such as thyme, will release their fragrance when walked upon.
The spring house acts as a terminus for the view at this end of the garden, much like the pool house does at the opposite end.
