"Built in 1920 as a summer cottage-by-the-sea, this classic, north Laguna cottage long outlived its original owners. Now, refreshed and restored, the home echos with the soul of the early 20th century, while giving its surf-focused family the essence of 21st century modern living. Timeless textures of cedar shingles and wood windows frame the modern interior, itself accented with steel, stone, and sunlight. The best of yesterday and the sensibility of today brought together thoughtfully in a good marriage." Photo by Chad Mellon

For a space that calms, cool tones are the way to go. These shades draw in the colors of the ocean and sky to create a peaceful indoor atmosphere.

Many say the most important area of the house is its front door - it sets the scene for what lies within. Here the double doors give a feeling of welcome and spaciousness. Large panes of glass allow-in lots of natural light.

| SWITCHBACK STAIRS | From Before to After, it's amazing to see vision become a reality. In Westhampton, New York, a homeowner installed this modern switchback floating staircase to connect two floors. They used a speedboat silver powder coat on both the rod railing and the stair stringer, creating an artistic wash of color. The homeowner knew that this staircase would be the first thing seen upon entering the house. They had a vision for a defining staircase that would hold the house together. The silver melds nicely with the wooden handrail and thick stair treads. It’s a look that is as sturdy as it is beautiful.
