Io designed the entire landscape for this small farm located in the Ogden Valley area. The Beautiful almost 10-acre site was originally farmland, and the master plan for this project envisions preserving the rural character and function of the landscape by creating a small-scale, self-sustaining farm. Io helped to program the uses across the site, planning for a rotational pasture system for horses, cows and sheep. The site also includes a kitchen garden and orchard with beehives. Chickens and ducks were also located near the kitchen garden and house for fresh eggs. The landscape was not only designed to be functional, but also beautiful, with a formal patio and infinity edge pool overlooking the pastoral scene adjacent lake.

We worked with the owner of this Mercer Island home to completely transform his large, shady backyard and unproductive vegetable garden into a sunny productive space. The new extensive annual vegetable garden features deep raised beds, wide pathways, small production greenhouse, a tool shed, rain garden and patio for entertaining. Plant design and installation and photography by Chris Kolb of Ark Gardens. Chris designed an edible foundation border for his clients in Sandwich, MA. It includes Witherod Viburnum, Low bush blueberry, Wintergreen, and Highbush Blueberry. All these native shrubs produce edible berries. Wintergreen is also used as a tea. It is never a challenge to plant under oak canopy when the appropriate plants are selected for the job.

This garden design for the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show consisted of 9 regularly spaced reflective pools with planting surrounding each. Inspired by the Roman Baths in Bath, these perfect squares suggested the regularity of the Hypocaust columns and serve as a reminder of the city’s relationship with water. The concept for the planting is ‘A modern meadow’; the mix of forms and colours is intentionally unusual. Well defined flower heads and shrubs in the foreground contrast against a hazy ‘fluffy’ backdrop evocative of steam rising from the hot spring water. The use of plants such as euphorbia, lavender, santolina and rosemary combined with breedon gravel paths evoke a mediterranean feel.
