This sleek garden office was built for a client in West Sussex who wanted to move their home office out of the house and into the garden. In order to meet our brief of providing a contemporary design, we included Western Red Cedar cladding. This softwood cladding has beautiful tones of brown, red and orange. The sliding doors and full length window allow natural light to flood in to the room, whilst the desk height window offers views across the garden. We can add an area of separate storage to all of our garden room builds. In the case of this structure, we have hidden the entrance to the side of the building and have continued the cedar cladding across the door. As a result, the room is concealed but offers the storage space needed. The interior of the storage is ply-lined, offering a durable solution for garden storage on the garden room.

For this designer garden office, our client wanted to take full advantage of the space he had. Not only can you fit a large desk area, but a sofa and a fireplace which add a homely and cosy feel to this office space. The interior also includes small doors which inside have generous shelving space for documents and various office items. The exterior features a timber cladding ceiling with an extended roof overhang and a redwood decking area, adding a unique elongated appearance to this garden office.

The design approach was to create an enigmatic feel by camouflaging the building with the background. The unit was clad in vertical timber strips that were designed to fit within the garden and natural surroundings. The imagination was to bring life to a poetic expression: green grass below, and the blue sky above, and the outhouse at this threshold. garden studios are ideal places for working from home during the coronavirus pandemic.

The original concept for this space came from the idea that this modern glass greenhouse would be built around an old wooden shed still standing beneath the trees. The "shed" turned Powder Room would of course be new construction, but clever materiality - white washed reclaimed vertical panelling - would make it appear as though it was a treasure from many years before.

The original idea was to build a contemporary cedar-clad garden room which could be used as a work-from-home space and gym. With a Primrose project its OK to change the plan half way through and theses photos illustrate this perfectly! Although not typical, scope-creep can happen when clients see the room taking shape and decide to add the odd enhancement, such as decking or a patio. This project in Rickmansworth, completed in August 2020, started out as a 7m x 4m room but the clients needed somewhere to store their garden furniture in the winter and an ordinary shed would have detracted from the beauty of the garden room. Primrose therefore constructed, not a shed, but an adjacent store room which mirrors the aesthetic of the garden room and, in addition to housing garden furniture, also contains a sauna! The decking around the swim spa was then added to bring all the elements together. The cedar cladding and decking is the highest grade Canadian Western Red Cedar available but our team still reject boards that don’t meet the specific requirements of our rooms. The rich orange-brown tones are accentuated by UV oil treatment which keeps the Cedar looking pristine through the years.

Our garden sheds and outdoor buildings don’t have to be dumping grounds for tools, bikes, bins and all the extraneous items that haven’t found a home inside the house, instead they can be whole new spaces that you can turn your design eye to, just like any other room of the house. For eco-lovers and those that want to retain a lush garden look, grass covered walls and roofs will help your garden room to blend in with its surroundings or wooden cladding will also give a natural look if you don’t want to to go all out with the grass. When it comes to your interior design, a habitable, high-spec garden room is really no different from any room in your main house, so the decisions will come down to personal style, taste and needs.
