Painted Fern Garden Design
A third of an acre garden that had barely changed from when the owners moved in 30 years ago and sadly, due to Honey Fungus, had lost a number of trees over the years with others also in poor health.
As with so many of our client’s gardens, the existing planting that was in the garden didn’t offer much interest beyond spring. My clients were looking for an opportunity to garden and make better use of their plot. They were looking to have an area for their grandchildren to play in and were interested in adding a child-friendly water feature.
The topography of the site provided a gentle drop in level running across the width of the garden. This enabled an obvious location to site a water rill with the upper level providing a viewpoint to position a bench. Carefully positioned new borders were then placed to offer some division to the garden, whilst still allowing a connection of the individual spaces.
In order to span the seasons with the planting we positioned a border half-way down the garden. The planting scheme here whilst looking good all year round, was designed specifically with winter in mind and was sited to be viewed from the kitchen window.
A group of four Stewartia pseudocamellia trees were planted to act as structural features surrounding the water rill and would offer interest from buds, flowers, bark and foliage, whilst also being Honey Fungus resistant.

A sophisticated couple desired the perfect garden tailored to their sociable lifestyles. Having downsized and relocated to Hampshire following their birds leaving the nest, our clients were beginning an exciting new chapter. What was once an old, derelict barn had been tastefully renovated into a stylish and artistic home. We wanted to extend their interior design aesthetic into the garden, whilst being sympathetic to the landscape and history of the old farm complex.

A tranquil garden design teeming with herbs and medicinal plants. Visitors are encouraged to use the continuous path as an aid to walking meditation.
Along the path one can appreciate the filigree forms of umbellifers and gossamer fennel leaves. Awareness of subtleties such as plant movement in a breeze and backlit petals is heightened.
The layout of the garden is denominated by the path’s route which loops and circles to contain a circular water trough and round of thyme. This curved path is intersected at various points by a serpentine rill. Senses are heightened via the calming sound of flowing water, cushioned feel of camomile atop the seat and the uplifting fragrance of mint varieties.

A low impact build garden, generously planted for wildlife focus. Strong circular layout underpins the paths and patio features, creating rhythm and movement. A circular pergola above the patio mirrors the bold shape and casts reflections on the pond surface.
The raised wildlife pond has a duel purpose. It retains the upper terrace level on one side and provides a perch seat on the lower terrace wall level. The curved intersections into each patio create a grounded sense of peaceful calm in which to observe the wildlife presant in surrounding trees and pond.
The design works with the existing site gradient and reuses all the York stone crazy paving existing on site. Little has gone to landfill during this landscape installation.
Woodland planting scheme under the shade of mature trees supports a dense bird habitat.

A view from soon after planting shows the wide waterfall, and column fountain. Both add sound and interest, as well as provide water for birds and pollinators. More visible is the contemporary deck and the pond that nearly fills the backyard. "Floating" bluestone stepping stones link deck with garden.

Functions of the wood pergola include a wedding alter, dance floor or small dining space. Facilitating multiple purposes make this outdoor venue the perfect choice for any gathering.
