Turner Design Firm designers Tessea McCrary and Jeanine Turner created a warm inviting home in the iconic Silo Point Luxury Condominiums. Transforming the Least Desirable Feature into the Best… We pride ourselves with the ability to take the least desirable feature of a home and transform it into the most pleasant. This condo is a perfect example. In the corner of the open floor living space was a large drywalled platform. We designed a fireplace surround and multi-level platform using warm walnut wood and black charred wood slats. We transformed the space into a beautiful and inviting sitting area with the help of skilled carpenter, Jeremy Puissegur of Cajun Crafted and experienced installer, Fred Schneider Industrial Features Enhanced… Neutral stacked stone tiles work perfectly to enhance the original structural exposed steel beams. Our lighting selection were chosen to mimic the structural elements. Charred wood, natural walnut and steel-look tiles were all chosen as a gesture to the industrial era’s use of raw materials. Creating a Cohesive Look with Furnishings and Accessories… Designer Tessea McCrary added luster with curated furnishings, fixtures and accessories. Her selections of color and texture using a pallet of cream, grey and walnut wood with a hint of blue and black created an updated classic contemporary look complimenting the industrial vide.

The Family Room included a sofa, coffee table, and piano that the family wanted to keep. We wanted to ensure that this space worked with higher volumes of foot traffic, more frequent use, and of course… the occasional spills. We used an indoor/outdoor rug that is soft underfoot and brought in the beautiful coastal aquas and blues with it. A sturdy oak cabinet atop brass metal legs makes for an organized place to stash games, art supplies, and toys to keep the family room neat and tidy, while still allowing for a space to live. Even the remotes and video game controllers have their place. Behind the media stand is a feature wall, done by our contractor per our design, which turned out phenomenally! It features an exaggerated and unique diamond pattern. We love to design spaces that are just as functional, as they are beautiful.

The lower living spaces are fully finished and furnished with a guest room and private bathroom, eating area, and living room area with fireplace. The fireplace is the focal point of the room with the fire box positioned at eye-level. The fireplace is wrapped floor to ceiling in dark stained wood. Display shelves flanking provide the perfect place for artifacts as the natural light pours in, warming the space.

If you’re lucky enough to have more than one reception room then you have a bit more freedom when deciding what to do with your secondary space. Families with children or just young-at-heart adults could opt for a family room or games room; whether it’s a pool or snooker table room, a comfy relaxation or TV area, a video games haven, a playroom packed with toys or a sports room with accompanying bar. Usually games rooms are naturally fun, recreational spaces so it’s important that the furnishings are functional but enjoyable with an emphasis on comfort, storage, games and entertainment. If you have the scope, family room extensions are a great way of extending from your kitchen or other area of your house to create a whole new, dedicated family space or games room. Basements are also wonderfully suited to house games rooms as they are usually soundproof and secluded so that loud games, films and cheers of success or failure won’t be heard next door or upstairs. This should be a relaxing place that promotes fun and socialisation, so fill the room with comfortable seating. Plush armchairs, wide sofas, bean bags and reclining chairs are all great games room ideas that promote R&R. Add coffee tables and side tables for holding glasses and plates (if they’re allowed), books, magazines and all the other knick-knacks that accumulate in a family room. TV stands or media units are great for keeping DVDs, audio systems, gaming consoles and all other gadgetry neat and organised. If you have small children, be mindful of free floor space for any rough-and-tumble and bump-able surfaces. A cosy rug will be a great addition but make sure it doesn’t easily slip under fast moving feet! If you’re going all out for the games room option then the sky’s your limit when it comes to games tables and other gaming equipment. Snooker, billiards and pool tables will keep competitive spirits busy but if you don’t have the room, table football could be a more suitable option. There’s also air hockey, poker tables, table tennis and cribbage tables; simply pick your game of choice. Photographs, artwork, colour schemes and textures that reflect the essence of your household will add charm and promote a sense of comfort and relaxation for your family. Fill the room with features your family love – films, board games, books, music and perhaps sports memorabilia. Keep decor functional and practical – pristine white upholstery and rugs are probably not the ticket for the hustle and bustle of a games or family room. If you love light or neutral tones family room ideas that could work include light leather sofas, which will be easy to clean in the case of any spills, and soft coloured cushions and throws that can be thrown in the washing machine whenever necessary. How do I create a family or games room space in a small house?

Without a large kitchen or second reception room then it will be up to your living room to provide you with your games room or family space, and this is where storage will be your new best friend.
