In the dining room, we went with a modern, moody and textural look. A few of the eye-catching details in the space are the black accent wall, housing the glass and metal doors leading to the butler’s pantry, a large dining table, dripping sculptural chandelier, and a gallery wall that covers the entire back wall.

The brief for this project was for the house to be at one with its surroundings. Integrating harmoniously into its coastal setting a focus for the house was to open it up to allow the light and sea breeze to breathe through the building. The first floor seems almost to levitate above the landscape by minimising the visual bulk of the ground floor through the use of cantilevers and extensive glazing. The contemporary lines and low lying form echo the rolling country in which it resides.

At home, even the walls heal. Especially when they are Pantone-styled. Recently, the Pantone Institute of colour selected the “classic blue” to be the colour of 2020, and a year ago we decided that the walls inside the Ridnyi House should be the same. The first floor consists of a large living room, dining room, kitchen, and professional barbecue area. The living room with a fireplace is spacious and soft in its colour scheme. The designer ceramic vases with ikebanas fill the space with senses and flowers. Two floors have merged in the dining room, creating plenty of room for white loose clouds by Serhii Makhno. large wooden bench and an Elephant armchair wait for dinner to be served. And dinner is being cooked in the kitchen — there are light oak slabs instead of the countertop. This project began with a handsome center-entrance Colonial Revival house in a neighborhood where land values and house sizes had grown enormously since my clients moved there in the 1980s. Tear-downs had become standard in the area, but the house was in excellent condition and had a lovely recent kitchen. So we kept the existing structure as a starting point for additions that would maximize the potential beauty and value of the site A highly detailed Gambrel-roofed gable reaches out to the street with a welcoming entry porch. The existing dining room and stair hall were pushed out with new glazed walls to create a bright and expansive interior. At the living room, a new angled bay brings light and a feeling of spaciousness to what had been a rather narrow room. At the back of the house, a six-sided family room with a vaulted ceiling wraps around the existing kitchen. Skylights in the new ceiling bring light to the old kitchen windows and skylights. At the head of the new stairs, a book-lined sitting area is the hub between the master suite, home office, and other bedrooms.

When choosing your dining room table, consider the number of people you expect to regularly seat – the perfect size for a dining table allows an intimate meal without feeling crowded. A round table leaves plenty of room for serving food at its centre, but a rectangular table is more flexible for seating extra guests at either end. If you’re after true versatility, drop leaf or extendable dining room tables are the most convenient option. The material of your selected table will set the character of your room. What are the best dining chairs for my table?

If your table hasn’t been sold with matching chairs then you have some extra flexibility to select dining chairs that suit your desired dining room feel. For traditional dining rooms you will want to opt for a full set of high backed formal dining chairs, whether these are upholstered, leather or wood framed. If you are looking for a more informal dining room, then a selection of mismatched chairs in different materials such as moulded plastic and even metal can be a great way to achieve this. For a really relaxed dining experience, you could even opt for a full length bench, which has the additional advantage of saving space as it can be tucked away under the table when not in use.

How should I decorate my dining room?
