Vintage kitchen remodel. Our inspiration for the Spanish bungalow was California Coastal. We kept the beautiful terracotta floors, repurposed the cabinetry, added new countertops and backsplash. The client wanted a dishwasher so we extended the countertop to make room for the dishwasher & added additional cabinetry for more storage.

We designed and built this new kitchen as part of a main floor renovation of this 1891 rowhouse. The kitchen and main floor open plan reflect the homeowner’s contemporary taste, but with a nod to the historic aspect of the home. The clients were especially delighted with our success in achieving a “light and airy” feel. The client wanted to open up the entire floor to increase the amount of natural light that flowed into the main floor of this rowhouse. He also wanted a visual connection from the front entry to the back door. The new kitchen reflects his contemporary style. We flipped the original kitchen and dining room, and removed the walls to make the kitchen central to the floor plan. Moving the original kitchen from the back room to a central location in the floorplan allowed us to: • Place all the storage and appliances on a party wall where no windows would be obscured. • Increase the size of the kitchen and provide better flow for entertaining • Increase natural light by doubling the size of the back window and installing two new windows. A new full-light rear door also allows natural light to flow into the space. HDBros

An airy and light feeling inhabits this kitchen from the white walls to the white cabinets to the bamboo countertop and to the contemporary glass pendant lighting. Glass subway tile serves as the backsplash with an accent of organic leaf shaped glass tile over the cooktop. The island is a two part system that has one stationary piece closes to the window shown here and a movable piece running parallel to the dining room on the left. The movable piece may be moved around for different uses or a breakfast table can take its place instead. LED lighting is placed under the cabinets at the toe kick for a night light effect. This was a whole house remodel, the owners are more transitional in style, and they had a lot of special requests including the suspended bar seats on the bar, as well as the geometric circles that were custom to their space. The doors, moulding, trim work and bar are all completely custom to their aesthetic interests. We tore out a lot of walls to make the kitchen and living space a more open floor plan for easier communication, The hidden bar is to the right of the kitchen, replacing the previous closet pantry that we tore down and replaced with a framed wall, that allowed us to create a hidden bar (hidden from the living room) complete with a tall wine cooler on the end of the island. This “before” Manhattan kitchen was featured in Traditional Home in 1992 having traditional cherry cabinets and polished-brass hardware. Twenty-three years later it was featured again, having been redesigned by Bilotta designer RitaLuisa Garces, this time as a less ornate space, a more streamlined, cleaner look that is popular today. Rita reconfigured the kitchen using the same space but with a more practical flow and added light. The new “after” kitchen features recessed panel Rutt Handcrafted Cabinetry in a blue finish with materials that have reflective qualities. These materials consist of glass mosaic tile backsplash from Artistic Tile, a Bridge faucet in polished nickel from Barber Wilsons & Co, Franke stainless-steel sink, porcelain floor tiles with a bronze glaze and polished blue granite countertops. When the kitchen was reconfigured they moved the eating niche and added a tinted mirror backsplash to reflect the light as well. A major remodel for this 1959 home. We used a beautiful walnut stain for the flooring, gorgeous blue paint for the base perimeter cabinets and island paired with warm white upper perimeter cabinets, a walnut-stained hood to match the flooring, a massive island with a seamless jumbo quartz slab featuring a beautiful organic veining in a warm tone incorporated on the glass backsplash tile which unites all finishes within this space- Balancing the warm and cool tones. We used a timeless design with a modern flare for the lighting to bring an up-to-date aesthetic.

However, if the layout doesn’t work, especially if you have a small kitchen, then there’s no necessity to add in a kitchen island. You can add a breakfast bar or counter to your existing kitchen units, or stick with a good old-fashioned dining table if you don’t need the extra work surfaces. That said, if you do have the room, take a look at some kitchen island ideas to see if the designs inspire you for your kitchen. There are a huge variety of island designs to cater to different needs – you can have sinks, ovens, hobs, wine storage and all sorts of drawers and organisers built-in, you can have separate bars and counters that extend from your island, or you could go for a kitchen island on wheels to make your kitchen layout more versatile.

How do I choose my kitchen units and cabinets?

It’s always best to overestimate how much kitchen storage you’ll need as we all tend to have a habit of filling up whatever current space we have to the maximum. Next you can consider kitchen cabinet style and colour. Shaker style cabinets and raised and recessed panel cabinets offer a more traditional kitchen cabinet look, while flat panel cabinet doors tend to lend more to the modern and contemporary style. However, going for raised or recessed panel work in a striking colour such as dark blue, green or black can still work with contemporary kitchen ideas. White kitchens can give a sleek and clean feel, but remember you may have to do a bit more cleaning of those cupboard doors if you want everything to stay shiny and fresh. Whilst a large kitchen pantry is the dream of most homeowners, it can’t always be a reality. However, there are now lots of pull out compartments and drawers with trays and shelving that can act as mini kitchen pantries, and you can install handy cupboard organisers that fit onto the inside of the door to make the most of your cupboard space. You can also look at corner drawers and cupboards that open up to reveal lots of extra storage. Rails or small shelves along your kitchen walls or splashback can help with hanging utensils or pans, or storing small items like herbs and spices in an usually empty space. If you’re working with a galley kitchen, a one-wall kitchen in an open plan space or just a pretty small kitchen, there are some small kitchen ideas that can help you get the most out of your cooking and dining area. However, if you have the capacity for it, cupboards and kitchen units that maximise the floor-to-ceiling space you have will mean you can use all of that for valuable kitchen storage. Kitchen ideas and accessories such as baskets, trolleys and storage jars are both aesthetically pleasing and practical as they give you extra storage space.
