Top Styles, Colors and Finishes for Master Bath Remodels in 2018
Contemporary is again the No. 1 style, but farmhouse is gaining steam, according to the U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study
If you’re thinking about remodeling a master bathroom, there’s a good chance you’re imagining a soothing space decked out in neutral colors.
That’s an educated guess based on what real homeowners are doing in their master bathroom projects now. The 2018 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study includes responses from more than 1,100 registered users of Houzz who had completed a master bathroom remodel in the past 12 months, were currently working on one, or planned to start one in the next three months. Here are four design trends for master bathrooms based on what they had to say.

While those four styles have been the leaders the past couple of years, a new style is on the rise. Seven percent of renovators are choosing farmhouse style for their updated master bathrooms, more than twice the 3 percent who chose this style two years ago, and up from 6 percent who chose this style last year.

3. Brick Pattern Is the Favorite Tile Look in Master Bathrooms
Most renovating homeowners (88 percent) are choosing to install tile on their master bathroom walls, whether on shower or tub walls or as a vanity backsplash. The most popular layout is the classic brick pattern, in which tiles are laid in offset patterns in alternating rows, as on a brick wall (see photo above). Sixty-six percent of renovating homeowners are choosing it for their master bathroom walls.

But there are a number of patterns in which tile can be installed. Grid pattern — meaning that the grout runs in straight lines both vertically and horizontally — is a distant second choice for renovating homeowners (11 percent), followed by herringbone (7 percent). Some homeowners are opting for more than one pattern in their remodeled master bathroom.
4. Many Are Mixing Their Metal Finishes in Master Bathrooms
The majority of renovating homeowners (58 percent) are using the same metal finish across fixtures and hardware — faucets, shower heads, valves, door hardware, lighting fixtures and towel rods. But 42 percent of renovating homeowners are mixing metal finishes (as shown in this photo). This is a trend we’ve noted over the past few years.
