Soothing, Restful Master Bedroom That Functions Well
An Oklahoma couple work with their designer to create a relaxing retreat with new furnishings and built-ins
After husband-and-wife doctors fell in love with and moved into a midcentury-style house along a golf course in the scenic Quail Creek neighborhood of Oklahoma City, they immediately began adding their personality to most of the property. But as busy professionals with a toddler, a newborn and a dog, they had no time to focus on their master bedroom. Instead, it became a room thrown together with furniture they had used when they were both single. Finally fed up with the hodgepodge nature of the room, the couple hired designer Kelsey McGregor to help create a bright, relaxing retreat.
After: McGregor used a soft coastal color scheme with lots of blues, greens and grays, and enriched it with chocolate brown to create a resort-hotel vibe.
A new paneled bed features padded linen upholstery in ivory and exposed alder wood feet. “I wanted something that gave them a good backrest for reading or watching TV,” McGregor says. “I also chose it because it’s low-profile, with clean lines but still soft.”
An easy-to-clean 9-by-13-foot polyurethane area rug anchors the room, sitting atop a new hardwood floor. “It also helps accent the length of the room,” McGregor says. “It’s economical and perfect if you have kids and pets.”
The walls of the bedroom are painted a very light gray (Drift of Mist by Sherwin-Williams) that provides just enough contrast for the white trim while keeping the space bright. A sliding barn door leads to the couple’s en suite master bathroom, which includes a closet for clothes.

This view shows one of the two industrial-style elm wood-and-metal nightstands that flank the bed. With two drawers, each nightstand offers closed storage with space on top for a transitional-style blue table lamp and decorative accessories. “I wanted to bring in some warmth with the wood tones, but also wanted some contrast from the floor,” McGregor says.
McGregor installed curtain rods a few inches above the window to visually make the space feel taller. The faux-linen sheer window treatments add softness and texture, and allow lots of natural light inside. When the couple want more privacy, they can lower the electric roller blackout shades.
A warm gray quilt and a cream-colored linen duvet make the bed extra cozy. Framed abstract landscape wall art has a tranquil feel and coordinates with the bedroom’s updated color scheme.

A tall manufactured dark wood dresser with antique brass hardware provides additional clothes storage. “I like that it had a bit of a midcentury flair to it, but also that it brought the dark wood of the floor into the space,” McGregor says.
This wide dresser with elm and birch veneers set against white offers more clothes storage. Its length and width also help keep this wall and side of the bedroom from looking underdecorated.

This wide view of the updated master bedroom highlights the 72-inch midcentury-style chocolate brown leather sofa, which gives the couple a spot for sitting and reading or watching TV. “This was one of the last pieces that made this room come together,” McGregor says. “I was originally going to do a camel-color sofa there but couldn’t pull the trigger. I was surprised at picking the chocolate sofa, but it was the ‘aha’ moment. The leather gives a rich, warm feel to the space.”

Before: A closet with sliding mirrored doors previously stood on the wall opposite the bed. Since the couple already had a closet in their en suite bathroom plus two dressers, they eliminated it.

After: Removing the closet allowed space for a new built-in set of drawers, a gas fireplace and a built-in desk area, all seen here.
The three built-in drawers are made of maple wood and painted blue-gray (Web Gray by Sherwin-Williams) in a satin finish. “The drawers gave us the chance to add something both functional and beautiful,” McGregor says.

A flush-mount framed TV, which has the option to display art when not in use, hangs over the new gas fireplace and maple mantel. “I usually don’t like mounting a TV over a fireplace, but sometimes it’s necessary,” McGregor says. “As a designer, [I believe] it has to be pretty. This was a happy marriage of form and function.”
The clean and modern fireplace surround includes brick with a coat of mortar on top for a bit of texture. “The fireplace gave the bedroom a feel like a nice hotel, like an escape,” McGregor says.

The new desk area gives the couple a place to work on their laptop computer.
Now the homeowners have the beautiful and multifunctional master bedroom they always wanted. “It’s a complete thought now,” McGregor says. “Harmonious to the eye and a restful space.”

Before: “Overall, there wasn’t a cohesive plan,” says McGregor of the original bedroom, shown here. “This space was last on their list of rooms to touch.”
Indeed, the long and narrow room with an 8-foot ceiling, warm “greige” walls and mishmash of furniture felt too much like an afterthought. The couple gave away some furniture to family members, donated the rest to charity and started fresh with McGregor’s guidance.
