So they hired designer Samantha Crow to transform it with refaced white cabinets, warm wood floors and a gray-painted island topped with a rich butcher block countertop.
AFTER: Crow removed the existing island and added a larger custom-built island with room for seating. “This eliminated the need for a separate table,” she says. A walnut butcher block top adds beauty and function.
Crow also completely changed the ceiling and lighting scheme. “We had to scrape the ceiling and retexture it so it matched the ceiling in the adjoining family room,” she says.

Crow removed the cabinet facings and refinished them, adding curvaceous new hardware and soft-close hinges. She also added a new sink, marble countertops and a matching marble backsplash.
“In the cabinets next to the stove they originally had only one glass pane, so we added a second glass pane to the other side to make it more balanced,” Crow says. Wood flooring replaced the tile.
Countertops: Lyskamm quartz, Arizona Tile; backsplash: Greecian White marble, MSI; floors: Mannington Revolution

Crow included seating on two sides of the island so the whole family could have a spot.
