How Can I Make My Bedroom as Healthy and Relaxing as Possible?
The Indian philosophy of ‘vastu shastra’ is all about maximising positive energy. Give these seven sleepspace tips a try
The Indian architectural philosophy of vastu shastra – or ‘science of architecture’ – suggests ways to achieve health and prosperity by optimising the flow of cosmic energy, or prana, within a space. These millennia-old principles are still commonly applied to architecture and design in India today. Here are some ways you can employ them in your own home to make your bedroom a calm, healthy space.
Add a pleasing piece
Upon entering the bedroom, the first thing that should be in your line of sight is something that gives you a feeling of peace and serenity. This could be a family photograph, a favourite quote, a painting, a sculpture or even flowers that enhance positive emotions.

Ditch the clutter
Decluttering your bedroom is essential. Too much stuff, especially under your bed, weighs you down and brings stress to your life. Clear or organise areas that have accumulated papers, magazines and books to help you create a sense of order and extra space in your room.

Position your bed to help energy flow
Positive energy flows from the north and our blood contains iron, making our bodies magnetic and positive, too, according to vastu. When you sleep with your head towards the north, these two positive polarities repel each other, disrupting the flow of blood and affecting your sleep and health. So it’s advised that you sleep with your head towards the south.

Keep mirrors to the side
A mirror on the wall opposite the foot of your bed can disturb your rest. While you’re sleeping you release stress, and a mirror tends to hold that stress and reflect it back, affecting you when you wake up. Move the mirror to the side of the bed or cover it at night for a more restful and refreshing slumber.

Cover exposed beams
Exposed beams or slanted ceilings are oppressive, as they partially interrupt energy flow. Beams also radiate negative energy downwards. If your bed is directly underneath an exposed beam or under a slanted roof, it will be difficult to have peaceful rest. Cover these beams, for example with a false ceiling.

Soften corners with houseplants
Try not to sleep in direct alignment with sharp corners (tables, chairs, stools). These act as energy spears and create stress in the nervous system. There’s no serenity in a room that has objects or furniture with sharp edges.
One solution is to place plants near them to reduce their negative impact. Plants act as a barrier between you and the sharp corner, and also radiate positive energy themselves.

In vastu shastra, the door that opens into the bedroom is considered to be the gateway to opportunity. So it should be installed in such a way that it opens fully or at least to 90 degrees, so positivity can flow freely into the room. A door that can’t be opened fully brings barriers and hurdles in life.
