Feel Good Home: Bathroom Updates to Brighten up Your Morning

Take your bathing zone from so-so to sensational with these mood-boosting design ideas

Houzz Contributor. I've been writing for interiors magazines for over 10 years and like nothing more than snooping around other people's homes (with their permission, of course).

Your bathroom should be the most indulgent room in the house. It’s a haven of heavenly scents and soothing potions, plus it provides a brilliant excuse to do nothing as you soak away the cares of the day. Freshen it up with these easy ideas that are as invigorating as an exfoliating scrub.
Paste up pattern
Feature walls have been big news for years, but the bathroom is often overlooked. In fact, you’ll probably appreciate that beautiful wallpaper here more than anywhere else. All that wallowing offers time to take in your surroundings without the distractions of TVs and tablets. Something bright, bold and geometric will really ramp up the cheery factor.

Fill a vase
Even if you’re a fan of fresh flowers, the chances are you’ve been overlooking the smallest room in the house. But the tiniest bloom in a single bud vase can have a big impact here – and if the flowers you choose are scented, so much the better.

Adorn your towel rail
Treat yourself to a set of gorgeous new towels and flaunt them on a rail. Bright colours that pack a punch work well, such as these spirit-lifting zigzags popping against a charcoal wall.

Dress to impress
You might get more use from the family-sized vat of bubble bath than a dinky bottle of exquisite tincture, but which looks better on display? Give your bathroom the hotel treatment and show off the best of your beauty products for a smart display and easy access in one.

Make a splash
A high-impact hue makes the perfect backdrop for a statement tub. Blues and greens work particularly well in the bathroom. Just lie back and imagine you’re floating in a tropical sea, gazing at a cloudless sky. Pure bliss.

Upgrade your lighting
A little bit of luxury goes a long way and, when it comes to lighting, your choice of fitting can transform any room. Bathrooms are crying out for some unadulterated luxury, so an ornate chandelier is the perfect choice. Just remember to check its IP rating – some lights aren’t suited to steamy atmospheres.

Add art
Create your own miniature gallery in the bathroom and you’ll always have something to contemplate in the tub. These record sleeve frames are easy to open, so their contents can be rotated in an instant. Think of it as your own temporary exhibition.

Decorate with details
A spotlessly clean bathroom is a wonderful thing; a sterile, soulless one is not. Inject some characterful, vintage appeal in the shape of antique picture frames, worn enamelware and shabby chic furniture – pleasingly pretty against a pale backdrop.

Maximise with mirrors
Double the sense of light and space in your bathroom with the biggest mirror you can fit in, ideally covering most of a wall. It will also duplicate the impact of an intense colour, further freshening the scheme.

Adjust your privacy settings
Fitting a new blind is a great way to update a bathroom. Choose a white, light-diffusing one for a serene mood, or use it as a way to add colour or pattern to a plain scheme.
