Could You Mentor a Design Student? Find Out How You Can Get Involved
Have you always wanted to get involved and give back to the future of great design? Well, here’s your chance
In 2018, Houzz is partnering with universities across the country to launch a brand-new mentoring scheme, designed to give students of architecture and interior design the opportunity to be mentored by some of the best professionals in the Houzz community. That’s you, by the way…
Here are the key details of what you need to know about our new mentoring programme and how you can get involved.

How much time will I need to commit?
The mentors and mentees will be paired up by September 2018 and the mentorship will officially commence in October 2018 and run through to May 2019. This corresponds nicely with the students’ academic year.
Houzz will provide funds for the mentor and mentee to meet and have lunch as an initial introduction to each other. After the first meeting, we recommend you spend no less than eight hours (one full day), but not more than 32 hours (four full days) together through the duration of the mentor period (October through to May).

What will mentoring entail?
You’ll be supporting students as they enter their final year of studying. The Houzz Mentor Programme is designed to add value to each student’s journey, so we expect mentors and mentees to work together to decide what activities and time are needed in order to deliver this.

Some suggested activities for students might include, but are by no means limited to:
- Work shadowing for a half or full day at the practice or design studio.
- Shadowing an initial pitch to a prospective new client.
- Attending a first meeting, or client briefing after a successful pitch, to begin the client’s journey.
- An on-site visit to a live project.
- Phone updates to support studies.
- CV support
- Support for first applications to the industry, post graduation.
How will students be selected and paired with mentors?
We’re expecting the programme to be very popular and we’ll be assessing students on a number of criteria. We’ll also be pairing mentors and students based on geographical proximity, to keep things as easy as possible.
We’re not limiting the number of mentorships we’re offering, but we will work together with students and mentors to ensure there’s a professional and personality fit.

We’re looking for architects and interior designers who want to get actively involved in inspiring the next generation of design professionals. You’ll have lots of hands-on business experience and tons of passion and enthusiasm to share.
You must have a portfolio of work for us to review on your Houzz profile (Don’t have one yet? No problem, let us help you set one up), as well as industry-relevant qualifications and experience. Of course, architects will be required to inform us of their ARB registration number in order to be considered.
