Make a Good First Impression The entrance to your home sets the mood and tone for the rest of your house. Don’t ignore the opportunity to create something meaningful that greets you at the end of a long day and welcomes guests. Idaho design-build firm Solitude Homes created the meaningful and charming modern-farmhouse entryway shown here. White wide-plank shiplap walls, black accents, light wood flooring and a dramatic emerald green barn door helped deliver a Best of Houzz Design award to the firm. This is also one of the most popular entry photos of 2019.
The traditional Connecticut foyer shown here is generously proportioned and acts as a central circulation route as well. The spacious room has an area for the entrance door, a landing for the stairs, places for tables on which to set things, and benches and chairs. A foyer of this type needs to be 15 to 20 ft. (4½ to 6 m) wide and long to function with this capacity. Notice the extra-wide plank floors, which coordinate with the larger scale of the space.
This was the most popular entry photo of the past three months. Not only is it full of space for books, shoes, bags, mail and chargers, but it also has great style. The cubbies are backed by tongue-and-groove paneling. The bench is a lovely wood that warms up all that white. A new door opens to a floor of matte gray porcelain tiles, and the runner adds pattern atop the tiles. Detail worth noting: The doors on the upper cabinets are antiqued mirror.
