The lace-like floor to ceiling detail you see to either side of the mirror is actually plaster molding that was hand applied to the wall behind the mirror and highlighted with a run of LED tape lighting that extends from floor to ceiling to accent the plaster tracery. The wall behind the mirror is built out to support the mirror and to create light coves to either side of the mirror for the lighting effect. The mirror was applied to full height MDF backing attached to the wood framing behind it so that it is fully supported from floor to ceiling. We used LED tape light to provide the light source in the coves. We love LED tape light for how small it is and how easy it can be added to small, hard to reach spaces such as the coves in this bathroom, but you need to have a good electrician to ensure proper installation and straight lines. With LED we also always recommend getting a sample of the light to check the color and make sure its not too warm (yellow) or too cold (blue). LED lighting has made huge leaps in quality over the past few years, but it's still a good idea to check what you're getting.
