And here's an excuse to spend three hours in the trim department of a fabric store: trim detail. There are so many choices from tape to tassels to gimp; I usually recommend going with 1.5-inch woven trim. This size makes a pretty big impact on a small-to-medium sized window and usually falls within the $8-$12 per yard range.

Here is another traditional look (albeit an updated version) elegant in its simplicity. Box pleats with a button detail and a slight puddling on the floor show that traditional doesn't have to be fussy.

If you use drapes in front of the ripplefold track make sure you leave enough clearance for the folds of the ripplefold drape to stack up. I recommend having a specialist install it.

How the wave works. A straight hemmed drape with stiffened nylon snap tape sewn onto the top is snapped to carriers on the track. The carriers are evenly spaced, creating smooth waves in the fabric. It looks great on both sides of the window.

A look that lasts. The ripplefold drape keeps its shape for a long time because it is handled less often. You operate the drape on the track with a cord, baton draw or motorized device. If you are using heavy drapes or heavy lining, make sure your track is designed for heavy-duty use.

I once read that using darker colored curtains to frame windows can distract your eye from an undesirable outdoor view. See how in this room, the eye travels around the room, rather than beyond it. The warm gold panels mix well with the other warm tones in the interior design. Notice the pumpkin color on the bottom third of the panels too. It helps to bring the panels and the height of the ceiling down for a cozier feeling.

Charcoal panels are an exaggeration of the lighter grays on the chairs and rug in this office. The moody curtains are dramatic against white walls, while the natural wood desks contrast the curtains. The effect is one of sophistication.
