Special Displays for Football MemorabiliaThis game room space is Luke’s man cave, and a leather sofa and TV were on his must-have list. By the time they got around to this room, Curtis was looking to make some impactful but inexpensive design moves, as they were nearing the cap on their budget. One such solution was the wood backboard she designed for the TV. It keeps the TV from looking like a black square floating on a plain white wall, and the designer added special shelves for game balls and a football helmet. She also designed a high custom console behind the sofa “for Luke and his tall buddies.” TABLE
Organic Materials and Subdued ColorIn the entry, this sculptural root ball console table paired with modern art and handmade vases foreshadows what’s to come in the rest of the house — organic modern style marked by lots of white with stunning wood and subdued color. “The house is called Draycott,” Martin says. “Dray meant horse and cott meant cart, so originally it was a cart shed next to the watermill.” The mill no longer exists, but the cart shed, built in the 1750s, served as an apple store and a garage until it was converted into a house in the mid-1970s. Martin bought it in June 2014. “I had always coveted that little island,” she says. “As soon as I found out the house was for sale, I put in an offer. Two hours later, it was mine.”An old bridge spans the river to Filly Island. “It’s so peaceful here,” Martin says. “Ducks waddle up onto the grass, and there are two otters in the river — Squeak and Whistle!”Read more about this house
