The house is fairly solid and introverted when seen from the street to the south. A limestone wall screens the garage on the left, and weathered steel gates provide access to the front court on the right. The floating roof beyond the gates hints at the transparency of the house.

Outside CMU walls extend from the house like arms; in this case a seating nook is created near the entrance.
This front yard of a mid-20th-century Eichler Home uses ground-face concrete blocks to give texture to the walls, which layer themselves and increase in height as one moves closer to the house, like a means of transition from public to private. This example uses stacked bonding, unlike the more typical running bond.

The exterior of this house in Quebec is made from industrial concrete blocks. But instead of a running bond or some other stacked pattern, Kariouk Associates composed the blocks into a pinwheel pattern. It makes the boxy exterior appear woven
