Add a Thread of Black Black is an incredibly versatile color that really helps to ground a scheme. Use it a little or a lot, from room to room, to achieve a sense of harmony. Kitchen-black combines with white, in a classic Scandinavian pairing, and is used boldly on kitchen cabinetry and faucets. Move over to the living room, though, and it’s deployed more as an accent shade. It crops up on the fireplace, lighting and cushions, tying the spaces together but producing a much lighter effect than in the kitchen.

not the art. “When styling shelves or built-ins, I recommend personalizing your decor by mixing in favorite framed family photos, hardcover books or your favorite flowers,” Meyer says. “Also, mix and match items by varying the sizes of pieces. For example, place a large photo frame next to a small decorative orb, or a tall vase next to a medium-sized candle holder. I also recommend you layer different textures like wood, marble or brass for depth and to give your decor a collected look. And add pops of greenery like potted plants, succulents or a vase of flowers to bring life to your space.”

Craspedia. Also known as billy buttons, these cute little summer-blooming, ball-shaped yellow flowers are native to Australia and New Zealand, and are typically available year-round at florists. The stems are stiff and leafless, making them especially easy to work with. Style: Fresh, clean, modern, minimalist.

Rattan, Sisal and Other Natural Materials Designer Emily Hancock of Rollins Andrew Interiors is seeing a return to natural materials being incorporated into a room. “It could be the addition of a rattan or wicker stool or chair, sisal, abaca or jute rug, a seagrass coffee table or side table or bamboo table or floor lamp,” she says. “This is always a favorite of mine to use on a project.” Here, a pair of rattan chairs complement a midcentury Tulip-style table.
