For others who face the same galley vs. narrow island predicament, here's another great example of a 12' wide kitchen with an island by @Anthony James Construction The wall-to-wall kitchen dimensions are 12 1/2' x 17 1/2'., the base cabinets are 24”, the countertops are 25”, the island is 115" x 25"; the walkways on both sides of the island are 36”, and it even manages to squeeze in a 48" Subzero fridge. Other specifics: 9' ceilings, marble countertops:
Love the nook with shelving room dividers behind it!
I love how the light passes under the table!!!

Store some vegetables — for example, onions, garlic, uncut pumpkins and potatoes — in ventilated drawers to maintain their flavor and save fridge and bench space. Potatoes particularly hate the cold, as the starch converts to sugar, and the texture and taste suffer. Don’t refrigerate tomatoes, either — they taste better at room temperature. Lemons and oranges also give up more juice when not chilled. A low-level drawer with a mesh screen front is ideal for fruit and veg storage.
Toe kick drawers are handy for horizontal wine storage; infrequently used platters, trays and boards; table linens and tea towels; instruction books and paperwork; oversized cooking pans; a hidden supply of chocolate; pet bowls; and valuables.
Plastic containers often mysteriously become separated from their lids too. A couple of internal shelves make for a tidy solution. Instead of throwing containers of every shape and size into this drawer, save similar containers that fit into one another and stack them neatly in separate piles.
Store glassware upside down on nonslip rubber drawer liners, sold in kitchen and cookware shops, to cushion rims and prevent sliding. Silky smooth soft-touch drawers are best for storing glassware, especially stemmed wineglasses, which may tip.
12.5' x 17.5' kitchen. 36" Walkways 115" x 25" island 24" counters 24" deep fridge, 48" wide I would choose a fridge with narrower doors and stop the island before it so that traffic isn't impeded. Also, it looks like it would be awkward to pull ingredients out of the fridge and get them to the stove area--that fridge door would be an obstacle

Best to order a few samples. // Similar ice box style latches can be found from Cliffside Industries. 3 of 3 A Shaker style with timeless accents. "Tommy's tailored approach includes some smart design ideas like breaking up dark and light cabinets, laying the tile in a zigzag pattern and painting the door and window frames black," says House & Home editor Suzanne Dimma. "Combined with the oversized lantern pendant, it is wow." See more of Suzanne's favorite kitchens in our gallery. Plus, watch a tour of Tommy Smythe's old apartment. IKEA Adel white cabinetry is dressed up with: a) Restoration Hardware pulls; b) IKEA end panels and doors that feature rails and stiles, rather than the unadorned stock panels that come w/ the set; c) toe kicks and crown mouldings custom installed by a carpenter & sprayed w/ Benjamin Moore paint that was color-matched to the cabinetry Pendant light: Likely Restoration Hardware or West Elm. Subway tile = Home Depot, Jr w/ grey grout
IKEA Adel cabinetry is paired with Restoration Hardware 7" Abrey pulls and topped by a custom black granite countertop that seamlessly integrates a short backsplash that runs behind the IKEA DOMSJÖ Sink ($185). Faucet: Blanco Culina ($450) http://bit.ly/blanco-culina Open shelving from Pottery Barn and the original paneling painted with an unknown color of Benjamin Moore paint warms the modern cabinet design, while retaining a fresh, clean, and appealing ambience.

I like the built-in bookcase for cookbooks and the wall of windows and the pot-filler faucet above the stove. The Rohl Apron Front sink weighs 200lbs so they reinforced the cabinetry to support it. Hood: likely by Viking
I like the wall of windows and how they disguise the refrigerator from this vantage point by placing the island in front of it with decorative open shelves.
LOVE
LOVE My dream kitchen.
The lighting is spectacular, especially the lamp secured to the right wall.
I love the little lights by Tech Lighting and the way the natural light of the window makes the alcohol shimmer
The countertop is likely a large piece of marble
I love the 4 Edison Caged pendants ($169) http://www.houzz.com/photos/15354631/Edison-Caged-Pendant-industrial-pendant-lighting
The simple design of the ladder was custom made by a metal shop to just hook onto the rail.
I don't like the adjacent room
Inset wheels make the island appear moveable and create a visual illusion that appears to increase the room size
Neolith is a type of porcelain that comes in sheet form, making it ideal for floors and walls. Iit’s available in a variety of patterns, such as Iron Moss, shown here."
I like the skylight on the left
I like the millwork on the island but the drawers are too narrow. Maybe they did that to make the kitchen look taller
Smaller, European stainless steel appliances dress up and fit the small IKEA kitchen better. These are from Bertazonni & cost less than the well-known brands. Open glass shelving gives the kitchen some life. Countertops: Caesarstone in the color Raven.
I like the backsplash of custom windows by Fleetwood USA
