outside
Clean and contemporary. Thin-edged metal house numbers in a modern font complement the minimalist entry of this Phoenix home. The contrast between the color and material of the wall and the house numbers, as well as the landscape lighting, make the numbers easy to read from a distance. Great for: A wide range of house styles, from contemporary to more traditional. For traditional-style homes, use the contrast of a modern house-number font to make a subtle contemporary statement.
Accent wall. Most people think of an accent wall as something you add only to interiors, but it’s also a terrific way to introduce a burst of eye-catching color on the outside of your home. What I love about exterior accent walls is that you can go a lot bolder than you might on the inside. This is because the area probably gets flooded with natural light, which softens and lightens the hue.
Goldenrod (Solidago spp). There are many species of goldenrod, and none cause hay fever. You probably know the aggressive self-sower Canadian Goldenrod (Solidago canadensis), which is often along roadsides. Stiff Goldenrod (Solidago rigida) is somewhat less aggressive, but there are shorter and better-behaved species, like the grassy-looking Riddell’s (Solidago riddellii) and Zigzag (Solidago flexicaulis). All goldenrod species are highly attractive to beneficial pollinating insects.
