A shower bench is a functional addition that we often recommend. Not only is it a place to sit and shave legs, but it can also help people with balance, strength or endurance difficulties. It also provides a surface to place products on. Or it can just be a spot to take a moment and let the hot water wash over you. A shower bench seat should be 17 to 19 inches high and 15 inches deep and must not infringe on the interior size of the shower. That means that if your shower size is the minimum 32 by 32 inches, the bench should not take away from those dimensions. In terms of materials, I always like to recommend a slab finish, at least for the top of the bench. This could be marble or quartz, for example. Usually I recommend matching the bench slab top to your vanity countertop for design continuity. I wouldn’t recommend tiling the top of your bench, because the grout lines can be uncomfortable to sit on.

The shower has a marble mosaic floor that provides another traditional touch. On the walls, large-format (30-by-60-inch) porcelain tiles have an onyx look. The floating shower bench is also covered in these tiles for a seamless, minimalist effect. The shower water flows into a linear drain on the right. “This drain was a challenge,” Rieser says. “My clients really wanted a linear drain, and we wound up having to have this one custom-made and painted.” The drain and the floor that slants toward it contain the water within the shower stall, allowing for a curbless entry. The rest of the bathroom also has tile flooring. “We wanted the classic look of a herringbone wood on the floors,” Rieser says. “To avoid water damage to real wood, we opted for a ceramic tile that has a wood look.”
And when I think of you here The hard flinty fact is that you left me You left me And the rest of my life’s work Is to convince everyone That you were wrong 60" tall mirrors
With the other old vanity out of the way, Pearson placed the shower in the corner next to the closet entry. This allowed her to create a generous stall that measures a little over 6 by 3½ feet. Pearson extended the same tile from the shower stall across the vanity wall, which makes the room feel larger. The tiles are porcelain with marble-like veining and measure 13 by 36 inches. One asset the existing bathroom had was a skylight. The designer preserved it during the renovation, and it bathes the room in natural light.
The countertops are Taj Mahal quartzite, a durable natural stone.
After reviewing precise wheelchair measurements, Alexander custom-designed a solid wood vanity with ample clearance for both the user and a caregiver. A Taj Mahal quartzite countertop delivers durability and stain resistance for the family’s grandkids; an ogee edge brings a touch of elegance. Travertine mosaic flooring with plentiful grout lines adds texture and essential slip resistance. Together, these thoughtful choices create a space that’s safe, functional and stylish.
