Off an upstairs kids' hangout, this space was gutted and turned into a cozy study for the kids. "I made an extra-large windowseat so that more than one child could lounge at once," says Hallberg. Designer tip: Use an indoor-outdoor fabric in children's rooms to stand up to wear and tear.

This is the finished room, with everything from the ceiling height and location of the crown molding to the dimensions of the brick headboard wall based on golden section dimensional rules. Though a large room, the scale and proportions still feel comfortable, not overwhelming.

A place for the bed is carved out of the leftover space under roof, while the eyebrow dormer adds joyous light to this bedroom. In a child's room, placing the bed in the alcove frees up the main area for play.

All of the children's rooms have a similar open, modern and bright feel to the rest of the house, but are still very kid-friendly. Each child's room has one bold wall of color, built-in desks and shelves, and a trundle bed custom designed by McCafferty.

Triggs added the custom built-in desk for the daughter, with a linen corkboard above for posting favorite artwork and photos. Open shelving is used mostly for display but can become convenient storage as her needs change.

Triggs likes the story of the ladder in the daughter's bedroom: she and Kalmbach had liked the idea of stationing a ladder there from the start, but Owen wasn't sold. Then one day, out of nowhere, she showed up with this one, which she had bought nearby, much to the delight of Triggs and Kalmbach. The bed is original to the home, but also used to be in dark wood tones. They brightened it with white paint and Dwell bedding, and chose one of Owen's paintings that carries through a touch of the bedding's pink color. The light is from IKEA.

This boy's bedroom mixes vintage, modern, playful and stylish themes. The colorful lockers came from Kalmbach's store; the surfboard is actually a creative take on a growth chart. The clean, simple bedding is from Dwell. Overhead, models built by the room's inhabitant add sci-fi-inspired character.

Most kids have closets that can store more than their pint-sized clothing. Install a couple of shelves and cubbies that can hold small toys and books. This helps to make the best use of closet space and frees up precious playspace.

Leave as much open space in the room as possible. Kids often mistake the house for a playground. They tumble, wrestle, roll and bounce without regard to your antique console table or the 100-year-old vase passed down from your great-great grandmother. If they have a space of their own to do as they wish, your furniture in other parts of the house will stand a chance at longevity.

The other side of the entry hall housed a sunroom that has been transformed into a playroom for the boys. This castle loft play space is carpeted and has its own light, making it the ultimate fort. It also utilizes a thick zone in the form of these deep bookshelves down the side, which helps create a niche for the ladder.

This loft bed acts as additional sleeping space in case of guests, and creates a playful reading space below.
