My Project
We’ve been noticing a lot of small flush mounts where designers might have once put can lights in the residential interior design projects uploaded to Houzz. Not so coincidentally, those fixtures — and their close cousins, semiflush mounts — seem to be getting renewed attention from manufacturers. This assortment from Arteriors illustrates just how chic these lighting staples are getting.
Take the classic ring chandelier, which seemed to be the darling of the lighting world this season. Many designers streamlined them by swapping candelabra-style lights for integral LEDs that virtually disappear within the fixture, such as in this antique-brass-finished Empire chandelier designed by Laura Kirar for Arteriors.

The kitchen cabinets are Ikea boxes that have been wrapped in Douglas fir plywood. The cabinet door edges have exposed plywood edges and the original 1950s cabinet hardware was cleaned and repurposed. Open plywood shelves lined with green plastic laminate — to pull the outdoor colors in — float in front of a new frameless glass window, framing garden views and providing a display for the owner’s ceramic collections.” Other special features. “A new island serves as the main inside gathering area,” Ryan says. “The quartz waterfall-edge countertop detail was selected for function and durability. A stainless-steel-back countertop with an integral sink fabricated by a local metalworks company is both cost-effective, functional and highly durable.”
To keep the material palette simple, we used maple veneer cabinets that were a very close match to the Baltic birch plywood walls and ceilings,” Efstathiou says. Other special features. The countertops and short backsplash are Europly plywood with black laminate covering and exposed edges. Blackened-steel hardware, shelf and range backsplash. Black stainless steel appliances. “I think the lack of variety in materials is what makes this kitchen stand out,” Efstathiou says. “The materials are veneer plywood walls, ceilings, cabinets, concrete floors and steel accents — that’s it.”
Byrne suggests choosing an inline fan, where the motor is located remotely, out of the room. “An inline fan has a minimal noise level that isn’t as maddening as the din made by conventional fans,” she says.
To cut down on time spent repainting or cleaning walls, go for a tiled finish rather than paint or wallpaper. “Painted walls can get dirty very quickly in a bathroom, but tiled walls are quick and easy to clean with a damp cloth,” says Ana Rezende, senior designer at Ripples Bathrooms. This will be particularly useful in areas where hands are frequently brushing against walls, such as near the sink, next to wall-hung towel hooks and around light switches.
Use a wall-hung vanity unit and toilet to keep the floor as free as possible,” Rezende says. “It makes it so much easier to clean around the entire area, especially the floor.” “All fixtures should be easy to clean,” Byrne says. “Look at the toilet seat. Can you reach all the crevices with a cloth? Streamlined fixtures will be easiest to clean.”
Byrne recommends choosing a hinged shower door as opposed to a sliding or bifold one for an easy-clean bathroom. “A hinged shower door is the best choice, as there are fewer spots for water to linger and mold to form,” she says.

In addition to improving the room’s flow, Lin gave it a warm, contemporary style and upgraded its stark gray-and-white scheme to a more soothing palette of white, rift-cut white oak and soft blue. Set in putty-colored grout, ceramic tiles with a ribbed and curved moon design rise above the Blanco Zeus Silestone perimeter countertop. “[The tiles] give the kitchen a more playful, organic character, and they juxtapose against the straight lines of the cabinetry,” Lin says. The lower cabinets and island backing are stained eucalyptus wood. “This was a conscious decision of blending a clean minimal look with texture and warmth,” Oh says.

If you know a swing door will negatively affect other elements in your bathroom, go for a sliding door. But keep in mind that sliding doors are known to be difficult to clean because the track and components can accumulate buildup. WALA You can also opt for no door at all. A fixed panel of glass creates a modern look that’s easy to clean. These panels can be framed in metal or frameless, as seen here.

Another biophilic design strategy is to replicate the organic structures that we find in nature, by prioritizing soft, rounded shapes.
One needn’t go the custom-cabinetry route in order to disguise a door. This Portland, Oregon, guest room by Arciform has a closet door concealed simply by covering it in the same graphic wallpaper as the walls — with the pattern perfectly lined up, of course.
