the cabinet below our cooktop is only half depth, the downdraft is behind it but the motor is actually in the basement, just before where it vents out the wall. such an arrangement might save you some space. its also a fair bit quieter, we have whooosh but no motor sound. the storage is so efficient, its all 'one pot deep' so nothing to dig around for.
