Classic Touches As part of the remodel of this 1900s home in Victoria, British Columbia, Jenny Martin Design renovated the laundry room to create a luxurious feel while complementing the home’s history. “To do so, we introduced an inviting palette of rich whites and dreamy grays to highlight the architectural elements of the home, while classical finishes and custom millwork stay authentic to the home’s historical roots,” designer Adrienne Hempstock says. The laundry area sits in a finished basement that’s also used for storage and as a mudroom. It features a vinyl tile floor, quartz counter, utility sink, hanging rod and white subway tile backsplash.
2. Natural Neutrals This laundry room from Next Level Remodeling in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, sits at the home’s entry, so it also needed to function as a stylish, hardworking mudroom. The renovation team stuck with a light and neutral color palette to make the space feel as large as possible and used a floral porcelain floor tile for some pattern. A white oak counter provides a folding spot, and a small utility tub squeezes into a narrow gap between the appliances and side wall. A display shelf behind the counter conceals the plumbing.
3. Compact Cottage This recently remodeled beach house in Hood Canal, Washington, had limited options for its laundry placement. The team at Allison Lind Interiors decided to keep the appliances in the same spot but add a custom cabinet — which doubles as an entry console — to make the laundry area a little more discreet. Caned doors add decorative flair and also allow for the ventilation the washer and dryer require. The quartz counter serves as a folding table as well as an entry table. The shiplap shelf above the cabinets conceals the plumbing for the appliances.
6. Efficient Built-Ins The team at Ferreira | Verfürth Architekten kept everything neat and tidy in this laundry room in Dusseldorf, Germany. A seamless counter for folding and organizing spans the whole setup, with built-in shelves for laundry hampers cleverly housed underneath and fold-out racks for drying overhead.

Sophisticated Farmhouse In Austin, Texas, Haven Design and Construction personalized a laundry room for its clients with clean lines and textured pieces to create a look it describes as “urban farmhouse.” Black hardware and countertops stand out against beige cabinetry, and the patterned floor tile pulls the whole design together. The laundry room also serves as a mudroom, so a built-in bench, storage baskets and wall hooks provide areas to hang bags and stash shoes.
9. Stylish Storage This organized and efficient laundry room in Japan by closet designer and organizer Nankai keeps everything neatly in its place. A drying rod spans the length of the room, leaving plenty of space for air drying above a folding shelf. Built-in drawers and cabinets store linens and laundry supplies, with an extra shelf overhead providing even more storage.

Slate-colored floor tiles and walnut butcher-block countertops, a large farmhouse-style sink, a subway tile backsplash that goes to the ceiling and leather pulls on the pocket doors add tons of charm within the small footprint.

Farmhouse Function The pros at Darci Reimund Designs brought farmhouse style to this San Francisco-area laundry room with barn lights, Shaker-style cabinetry, a farmhouse sink, shiplap and knotty floors. The room sits off a mudroom entry, so the large sink is handy not only for washing delicates, but also for potting plants and arranging flowers.
6. Beautifully Botanical Studio M Kitchen & Bath gave this Minneapolis laundry room calming style with elegant cabinets and hardware, a lovely botanical wallpaper and parquet floor tiles. An exterior door with a large glass panel lets natural light into the room, which also features ample counter and storage space.
10. Compact Cabinetry In this laundry room by Bella Luxe Home Design and Interiors, a soaking sink, hanging rod and dedicated hamper storage add tons of function in a compact space. Meanwhile, calming blue cabinetry, brass hardware, woven baskets and slim white tile installed vertically add pleasing style points.
For this Kansas City laundry room, Amy Krause Design created dedicated storage for two rolling hampers beneath a folding counter. The design earned the designer a Best of Houzz Design award. Krause also won a Best of Houzz Service award. As we noted in our 2021 design trends predictions, a dedicated space for hampers in a laundry room is a seemingly simple design feature that makes a huge difference. In this Houston laundry room, designers at Marker Girl Home included room for rolling hampers marked for whites, brights and darks. The firm won a Best of Houzz Design award for the space.
Samsung’s Smart Dial front-load washer and dryer learns your preferred cycles and settings, then prioritizes them on the central control panel. A turbidity sensor determines the ideal amount of water and detergent to use. It also determines how long to wash, ensuring that clothes come out their cleanest. Use an app to alert you when cycles are done, remotely start or stop the laundry and schedule cycles from your phone.
4. Keeping Things Clean and Healthy at Home Several new appliances might help with common household chores, and some just-introduced gadgets offer sanitation and health features, two big concerns these days. Shown here, LG’s slim WashTower combines a washer and dryer in one unit with a single, intuitive control panel in the middle. Start the wash cycle and you’ll know how long it will take to finish both the washing and drying. The washer shares info with the dryer, which automatically sets the optimal drying temps and time, preheating the drum for better results. The washer also detects the weight and texture of the clothing to calculate the best, most energy-efficient setting for each load, while the dryer uses steam technology to deliver maximum hygiene.

For this Tennessee closet, the pros at Inspired Closets Nashville managed to puzzle out fitting in cabinet and drawer storage, a drying rack, a tall cabinet for an ironing board or mops and brooms, and a countertop with a sink.
Flat-File Approach A Cohasset, Massachusetts, family of five was looking for maximum air-drying capacity. Emily Pinney designed a custom cabinet with six pullout racks that function like flat file drawers in which the clothes can air-dry, with room for hanging clothes overhead. Drop-Down Drying The pros at Vixon Custom Cabinets filled this Portland, Oregon, laundry room with storage and functional elements. But based on Houzz users’ comments, the drying rack was the fan favorite.
Fold in Place For this Chicago laundry room, Designstorms made sure that no unfolded T-shirt gets left behind. The homeowners can simply pull out the folding shelf and then fold the clothing as they pull it out of the dryer.
Convenient Countertop Another way to create convenient folding space is to build a countertop over front-loading machines, as Grove Park Construction did in this classic Nashville, Tennessee, laundry room.
Freestanding Storage While built-ins and custom cabinetry are great, it’s also nice to see some easy storage solutions homeowners can do themselves. In this Washington, D.C., laundry room by Jack Rosen Custom Kitchens, freestanding utility shelves provide a space for folded clothing, extra towels, baskets of laundry supplies and more.
Elevated Ergonomics Elevating front-loading appliances means less bending over, making it more comfortable to load and unload the laundry. This is also a good strategy for those who wish to age in place. For this sleek design in Vancouver, Lida Homes took advantage of the space beneath the machines to add two large drawers.
Hamper and Basket Storage Alan Clark Architects flanked the machines in this Atlanta laundry room with storage spaces. A rolling hamper can sort and neatly store dirty clothing on one side. On the other there are laundry baskets to help organize folded clean clothes. The modern farmhouse-style barn lights overhead provide nice lighting for folding the clothes on the concrete counter.
Soaking Sink A laundry room sink is so handy for soaking stained clothing or hand-washing delicates. Noelle Interiors included a large farmhouse sink with wall-mounted faucets to fit right in with the transitional style of this Los Angeles laundry room. Off the Kitchen Let’s start with what many designers say is the best location for a laundry room: off the kitchen in its own room. Pros: The logic is that most people spend the bulk of their time in the kitchen, and kitchens tend to be on the main level of the house — also where most of our time is spent. So locating the washer and dryer near the kitchen makes sense. That way if you’re cooking, cleaning, watching TV or helping your kids do homework, you’re within earshot of that dryer buzzer and can quickly stay on top of the loads. “You do it where people live, so you can actually use it,” Padvaiskas says. Dirty clothes can go straight into the wash and cabinetry can corral dirty boots and equipment. Pros at Kitchen Vitality Design combined both functions in this Charlotte, North Carolina, home. A stone tile floor in a herringbone pattern adds durability and style. And the dark gray cabinet color can conceal dirt and scuff marks.
4. Task Lighting Make sure your laundry area has ample artificial light as well. During the day, a glass door brings natural light into this Auckland, New Zealand, laundry space by Cube Dentro. But at night, ceiling lights and undercabinet lighting illuminate the countertops, making it easy to spot clothing stains or read the laundering instruction tags.

When planning a laundry room renovation, try to find a way to incorporate natural light whenever possible.
