I like the lip. Less likely to lose things off the back of the shelf. or turn it around - less likely to have things fall off the front of the shelf. harder to place a basket there though.

this sort of idea could work too. taller hanging for backpacks facing forward, shelf per kid. cube for basket of mittens/ hats or library books, higher spots for return items, grocery cloth bags.

this makes more sense to me than open lockers with exception of sturdy enough doors that there can be hanging storage there as well for gloves or papers or empty lunchbox? shelf/ basket/pullout drawer for treasures, back up hanging for coats, back up shoes. hat
