We wanted the look of a back-painted backsplash but there was no budget for this. So rather than pay thousands extra for this detail, we decided to use the 'charcoal' side-panels - the same kitchen cabinet material you see on the kitchen island - as the back-splash. This matches the same surface of the white high-gloss kitchen cabinetry. Best of all it was a fraction of the cost of using glass.
If splashed or stained, it's super easy to clean. The stove is an induction cooktop so that made this solution an even easier choice. I would otherwise be reluctant to use the high-gloss panel if using a gas cooktop
Installation:
I would adhere the panel directly to the drywall or a wood substrate, then apply a very light silicone bead at the base where it meets the countertop and cut edges (sides).
For cutting i would purchase a small high-gloss drawer door (check IKEA's 'as-is' section and maybe pick one up for 5 bucks) and test by cutting it. Depending on the length of backsplash you need, you can try and cut just one side or both ends if necessary of a standard size panel. If you need more length and require 2 panels, cut one end of each and place the manucfactured (finished) edge in the middle.
