This is what I had in mind for the thickened portion of the thickened opening. Your builder could use a 1/2" glass bead mould to transition to the drywall. I would lighten the 1x trim down to 3" for the stiles and rails.(vertical and horizontal) pieces

Andy - here is a photo with a detail of the shingle siding at grade. This example has a corner board which we don't have at the garage, but the step detail works. If I understand your description, keep the flare on the garage door side and leave it flat on the pool storage side like the example in this picture.
