can't find a stud finder that works on lath and plaster

electronic ones are useless. Magnet ones are too weak

    That's because you probably have chicken wire behind the plaster. Find a stud with a drill and then go 16" on center from there to start. Unless you are hanging a cast iron stove the lath should be strong enough?
