Hello All !! We have lovely big windows in our front room , we do like the wooden blinds however it inhibits so much light . Would love your ideas of alternative ways to offer privacy from people passing by and looking in . Could o get some sort of blind for the lower part of the window or some type of frosting ? Or would you such I look at some type of hedge at the front of the house, if so what type would you suggest ?

Or you could frost the lower half of the window with an attractive film (Purlfrost have some nice period ones) or maybe half height shutters?

These are interior doors, right? What if you replaced the glass entirely with a wood shutter that opened and closed, then you wood be able to let light come through when you wanted, and shut them for privacy. It would also look nice. Like this: or

Hi, I love Victorian houses especially ones with original features. Is there also a fireplace in the lounge? I don't necessarily think you need exactly the same on both rooms. I this if the flooring is the same then you can create two different moods. Like you say if one get more light and has a large bay window then you will automatically get a very different feel. I would say that out of the colours you mentioned I would be more inclined to go with the grey tones in the front room. These would tie in tonally with the navy in the dining room. I would also follow the same theme with woodwork and mouldings etc. Perhaps you could be brave and introduce a bright accent colour in the front room like a lovely bright yellow/mustard colour. This would add the warmth and work with the brighter aspect. You could include it on larger spaces such as a rug, cushions and blinds etc Hope this helps. Good luck with your move!

Hi Isobel, Could you add an obscured film to the window instead? I would have thought that this would be fine with planning as it's removable. I'm assuming that the planning restriction is because you're in a conservation area? The films come in different finishes, I've had a fairly successful go at applying a sandblasted one. There are specialist companies that will do it for you though

Thanks Kim .. I don’t think we want blinds as it still restricts the light … I will absolutely take a look at purlfost and half height shutters 🙌🏾

I would look at the blinds before ruling out as they come down from the top so similar effect to shutters. Would've loved them for our house but windows too wide sadly. We have day night blinds instead (all across the front as a bungalow) which are great for privacy and not restricting light but may not look right on a Victorian property?

Another vote for half height shutters.

If you plant a hedge look at your local neighbourhood for inspiration and choose something that fits the streetscape. Most likely beech for a fast resul

Thank you Kim . Yes look into all options … my initial thoughts feel like the windowfilm might feel a little claustrophobic I know it probably won’t it’s just me trying to process it . Always loved the idea of shutter ( more luxe ) which I think will add to the house . The blinds are just too dusty 🤣.. will have a look at day night blinds . All options worth exploring . Hi Jonathon , yes I am liking the half height shutters 🙌🏾 think it’s adds to the room . My neighbour over the road have box hedging Buxus Sempervirens so maybe it’s worth exploring as well .

You could have the bottom half of those blinds closed in the meantime til you decide on a more permanent solution? You could also replace with wider slat one which would let in more light and you’ve got the option to close them at whatever height you want or full.

I used to do the same with smaller slat blinds in my old flat for privacy - both those and above are standard blinds, just ‘close’ by hand and you’ve got a temp solution 😊

I would hate to feel hemmed in by blinds or whatever during the day. At night yes, but why during the day? I live in a pretty built up area so little privacy, but I would hate to block out the sun and the sky just in case someone peeks in. This is my big bay window.

Back of the house not a problem , its the front which is .. so maybe it’s a journey of seeing what we are comfortable with . We are looking for my light in the front room but don’t want to feel exposed

We had a local sign writer do our front room window thats next to a busy path. Still get lots of light but total privacy now. As we are at the seaside we went with the theme and we love the result

Linen/muslin/voile/sheer cafe curtains for day-time privacy to cover the bottom half of windows only - but still lets light through. For evenings, have a roman blind covering the whole window.
