I had a house fire and no insurance. I need ideas for the fireplace and a unit each side of it please. The room is 13ft square which is small, I have a very small budget. Tia.
That was a bad fire. It looks as though the new fireplace has been added in MDF ready for you to paint so l would add shelving also in MDF in each alcove and paint them too. It’s probably one of the cheapest options.
If there are no budget restrictions you can just find inspiration pictures and buy everything to match. But it’s different if budget is tight and instead you should buy the big ticket items as cheaply as possible and then make design choices when you know what you have to work with. What this means is consult Facebook marketplace, Freecycle, EBay, the charity shops and local auctions for a sofa bargain, a rug, chair coffee table and artwork. Then you can make some full priced purchases to tie it all together.
You need a plan of what you are shopping for- so work out how big a sofa you can fit in, where you want things to go and then see what’s available. Don’t be disheartened if you can’t find what you want this week- next week there will be different choices.
If it were me I would be looking for a bookcase for one of the alcoves, a sofa for under the window, a low table for the TV opposite the window and an extra chair. None of the items have to match- they just have to fit in the space and you have to like them. Don’t forget that a sofa and chair that don’t match can be tied together with a couple of cushions, a well used bookcase can be given a new lease of life when painted- and choosing paint colours for the walls is easy when you have a starting point such as a rug or sofa colour.
Good luck- if you want any support when you have a couple of purchases in mind then ask this community- many of us have furnished a room in just this way and hunting out treasured bargains and making effort to get them into your house makes you appreciate the end result more than just shopping in the big retail parks.
