Master bedroom radiator advice needed !

last month

We are renovating our bedroom and have had one window bricked up as the main window is plenty big enough and our bed will now be positioned on that wall . We are having built in wardrobes where the blue outline is .

We bought a large black 3 column radiator to go along the right hand wall (as you walk in the room ) but are having second thoughts . (It’s an internal wall)

We are thinking of maybe getting a low white 4 column to go along the large window instead but even the longest one we can find, the BTU will be at the very lowest end of what the room needs ..

I don’t really like the look of vertical rads in bedrooms

What would people choose ? Here is the floor plan and the bedroom in its current state

It really depends on what colour the walls will be. A light wall with a black rad will certainly highlight the rad. Can it be returned if you bought online - you get 28 days to return an online item, no quibbles.

I would get the biggest size radiator possible in white. Black is very dominant and I'm not sure a radiator is the right element to emphasize. You could add an electric or plug in fan type heater later if necessary. Which direction is your large remaining window? I like your new room layout, it's a really good use of space. Losing the external window is a good idea in your case. Very creative.

Mary, it has been a while since I read the comments. I think you can take your time with growing with your new decluttered kitchen. It is truly beautiful with just the changes. Don't go spend a ton of money, save it and go on a holiday to a state park or something you have always wanted to do. If your friends that you invite over for dinner don't love ...... well just coming over and visiting,.... then oh well. As long as you are happy, but no need to break the bank..... you did great already. I love it, if you do more, please share though? And to bamamom, I so agree with you! My own, awful, claustrophobic kitchen is LESS than 8 ft x 11 ft... yep that tiny and horrible. I have taken out the nasty, dropped ceiling and have the slightly vaulted original one now, but with pipes showing where the HVAC was put in after and then the repiped ones....... I did not know they plumber would do this, much less the others were there.... gag me. And no money to do it up even decent.

As the rest of your house is decorated in muted colours with the exception of the bathroom), I would stick with that. Duck egg/pale blues and pale greens or chalky pink would be very restful for bedrooms. Or navy blue looks smart with a neutral scheme.

Paint the doors black matt and the fames cream add silver crome door furniture. Huge silver mirror above the covered radiator then add a runner of any colour you like and match it with the lamps and lighting. hey presto done.

Morning sun then. Upstairs bedrooms are normally a bit warmer than the downstairs. I would underheat (electric blankets work well) and adjust later once you are all moved in by supplementary heating if required.

I would love it under the window but it just won’t have enough BTU .. which means the rad has to be along the right wall as you walk in… the reason we picked black was as we will have long hanging black lights either side of the bed … we are in a bungalow

you’vd had one window bricked up, i know its a big job but increase height of window cill by changing window size. this will reduce the heat loss in the room and provide additional height for a suitably sized radiator under the window.

Thanks. We did think of raising the sill however the view out of the window is phenomenal as it looks out over the forest so keen to retain it

Do you have sufficient space alongside the wardrobe then it won’t be the first thing you notice when you enter the bedroom? The downside of having a radiator under the window is that if at some point you want floor to ceiling curtains you will be blocking out some of the heat from it.

The wardrobe is where the blue outline will be - if we go under the window it would be centralised under the window allowing us to open the wardrobe but will be under BTU … whereas if we put it on the wall when you walk in , nothing else will be along that wall. I just think aesthetically it looks nicer under the window but at the same time it needs to do its job - hence why we bought a large black column radiator for the wall on the right as you walk in … just having second thoughts on such a bold piece

Ah, thought they looked a bit lower than ours sadly (bungalow also). We have one under low window in the kitchen but sill is 2ft up. We do have a matching vertical one on the other side of the kitchen that is unobtrusive though - photo below for idea. Whether the black one will look good depends on the colour of your walls I guess, probably better on a darker wall. Hope you find a solution.

How about painting it to match your walls so it sort of blends in? I spray painted a brown radiator white (it was a freebie). I used a Hammerite spray paint and it was dead easy to use.

If it was an existing rad I’d certainly have a bash at painting .. just not sure I could bring myself to paint a brand new expensive rad lol… first world problems I know just nervous how a black rad will look in the room - I’m so bad at visualising !!

Quite a dilemma you have here. Buy a much bigger horizontal rad for the wall to the right side of the door. Leave the beautiful window as a feature. Paint the radiator the same colour as the wall Skimming Stone F&B or leave it white as it will be less obtrusive. I would save the black vertical one you bought for somewhere else in your house.

Thank you everyone ! Quick question to anyone in the know - could I run the pipe down the corner of the bedroom (boxed In) which would be where the fitted wardrobes are due to go before it then runs along the floor to under the window sill - we are having Hammonds wardrobes fitted in a few weeks - would having a radiator pipe behind the back carcass of the wardrobe create a problem ? (My understanding is that they create a cavity gab between the wall and the back of the wardrobe ) any help will be appreciated !!

You would be better running the pipes behind the wall filler. Usually you brace the units off the wall by around 70mm and scribe it into the wall which creates a 70mm void. Plenty of room for C/H pipes (:

Thanks -Luxe sadly I’m a newbie and not sure what that means 🤣 I assume you mean the gap between the main wall and the back unit of the wardrobe- would this cause a problem if we needed to access the pipes or cause any issues with their being heat in an enclosed space?

No worries at all

I mean the between the window wall and the side of the wardrobe, it is standard practice to leave around a 50-100mm gap. This is then filled in with a “filler” or “scribe” and it basically bridges the gap between your straight/plumb wardrobe side and the not so straight/plumb plastered wall. This would then create a gap down the side of the wardrobe which is perfect for pipes and also cables if you wanted to introduce lighting to the robes.

It also means that the doors aren’t opening immediately against the wall. If you have internal drawers you need the doors to open past 90 degrees which is why we always recommend that 70mm space.

I have in the past put access panels in the side or wardrobes in case there is an isolator that needs accessing, but if it is just pipes then I wouldn’t worry about it.

On these robes we did the side filler, ceiling filler and plinth at around the same width which I prefer myself, but each to their own 👍

You can just leave them as they are. You can take a picture of them before the wardrobes go in so you have that reference for the future too. Happy to help 👍

If it’s any help, my fitted wardrobes from Sharpes do not have anything at the back (no panel) so the room’s back wall is easily accessible. Are you having fitted wardrobes or free standing?

Fitted by Hammonds and they are fitting back and sides too also so there will be a cavity gap between the back and side panels
