Help Ideas on how I can update this kitchen (bring it back to life)

Dear all, I recently moved into this lovely cottage-style house. We need to change the flooring - thinking Luxury Viynal Laminate in a cherry woody colour. But I will also like to change the work top or do something else to update the kitchen. Our budget is very limited to £1000. I have heard about kitchen 'wraps' - but don't know much about this. Our style is more modern than traditional and I will like to update the blinds - but can't decide on colour or look. Any ideas are welcome.

I think you probably need to be realistic about what you can achieve with your budget and prioritise. Here are a couple of before and after examples from my rental properties where I’ve replaced flooring, worktops and tiles and redecorated. Which is certainly doable for £1k if you’re handy and massively improves a kitchen but may not make it your dream kitchen. Repainting units and replacing handles are also good options. With your budget it’s probably best to think about making your kitchen the best version of what you have rather than trying to force it to be something different. I Hope this helps.

You have mentioned updating blinds, however with the pic you show doesn’t include the window area. Another couple of pics might garner more ideas.

A soft mossy or grey green would be my first impulse but Sarah's dark blue looks good. It depends on your kitchen ware. White porcelains will pop with the blue and earthy stoneware will go more with the soft greens. I'd add a shelf to extend from the cabinet across the tile and a pot rack or hooks over the stove.

Susiem14, I think this room looks lovely and cosy and like your fireplace. I would add a few bits in cream and fawn/grey. Please don't be offended by the comment above... Everybody is different and we all have different budgets! I have recently changed my lounge to be neutral tones - still working on the cushions but sending you a photo of my new rug - was from Dunelm Mill - not expensive at all but v pleased with it.

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

I hadn't spotted it was mahogany tbh when I first looked! I probably wouldn't go for a light wood with the mahogany, perhaps something medium in tone rather than mahogany just to balance out with the rest of the room? You could of course go for a different material for the console and add wood for accessories. For the bookcases I might actually paint them in the ŵall colour or the White otherwise they might overpower that area and the fire? Another option is to paint the actual fire surround. If you decided on blue for an accent colour for example you could paint it an Inky blue. It's quite hard to say without knowing what/if you'll bring colour to the rest of the room as you could end up with a living area dark in tone and everything else very light. The bookcases will also visually widen the living space so you may find you also need side tables for the sofa to balance it (or a chair angled in front of the bookcase if it fits) but perhaps see how it looks first before making any decisions! Art or mirror over the fire would work but I think art for colour/pattern.

It’s a nice kitchen so I don’t think it will take too much effort to update it. The worktop dates it so something lighter in a white or marble look laminate would look nice. My sister had her worktop vinyl wrapped and it looks really good but it’s quite a labour intensive option and it cost £300 for her pretty tiny L shaped kitchen. I’m not sure if the budget will stretch for LVT but certainly worth getting quotes in. I’ve recently had sheet vinyl laid in my bathroom and it looks great and a very affordable option. I wouldn’t worry about the blind until the rest is done. You don’t say what sort of blind you’re looking for - roller, slats, Roman blind?

You say your style is more modern than traditional so you need to replace cupboard doors and door fronts.

With regards the flooring, avoid click LVT, go with Laminate, you will have far fewer issues and the Laminate will cope with a less even subfloor and the weight of appliances a lot better.

Just remeber you can't wash Laminate or Wood floors, and you can't steam mop any laminate, wood or vinyl floors. To clean Laminate or wood, just use a laminate/wood floor spray cleaner and a microfibre mop.

Glue Down LVT would be the best option but combined with required subfloor works, it will also be out of budget I fear.
