can I make this bigger and more central?

It’s so ugly! I want to remove the stone and open it up? It’s it possible to make it central? House has been extended but we are buying it soon, hate this feature would love a farm time open fireplace. Is there ways to put a bend in flume or is this just not a done thing?

I’m going to remove all that stone and old tiles, would love to plaster and make larger fireplace.

Help!

The way to get your own eyes on the issue is to start with a general clear out so you can really "see" your kitchen and "keeping" room. Box up and remove all the stuff - tops of cabs, counters, art on walls, fridge and floor clutter, photos, area rugs. Then dig into the cabs and the hutch and remove all the items you only use once or twice a year. Store those away from the kitchen so you gain more room in the cabs for items you regularly use. Is that a radiator on the wall by the TV? I'm thinking the hutch niche would make a great computer area with a built-in desk. Are there any other doors into this room and is this your only living room? What size is the window at the table? Are you up for more than rearranging things? Any construction you can do? Can you take more pix, comment here and attach images?

Agree with Judith too, paint all one colour as back wall. I like the fireplae and wouldn't replace it. That mirror it too big and not very interesting, doesn't do anything for the wall or the fireplace. The gold I suspect clashes with the metal on the surround, bit too new and shiny. I think a great piece of artwork would really set off the fireplace and make it a gorgeous focal point. As the fireplace is very angular I suggest a more organic colourful piece to soften it up a bit. A real painting rather than a print if you can. Keep an eye out at markets, second hand stores ... or even eBay!

Hello Edel, Well you are in the fortunate place having a loo and shower downstairs.. I am sure this might become useful when the boys are older.. So if you wanted more wardrobe space.. This doesn't have to involve wall to wall cupboards.. You could have free standing wardrobes.. A bigger bathroom would mean you could have double wall hung sinks and large walk in shower and a separate bath.. Wall hung loo as well.. Or possibly you could create a wet room style shower and loo and separate walk in closet.. accessed from your bedroom. Keep a bathroom next door.. Hard to tell if any of these ideas could work without a plan.. : ))

It can be done and I don’t blame you wanting to get rid of that stone. Whoever thought it was a good idea? 😂 it does depend on the internal structure so get a builder to have a look.

Ah thanks guys gives me hope. I’m moving there soon and absolutely hate that fire place! I’m leaving my beautiful Italian stone fireplace and getting this in my new house! I did change from horrid brown flowered tiled one a long time ago but it was already central, a bit concerned about this one. I can easily remove that stone but really really want a bigger open farmer style or stone fireplace again!

Well this looks like a late seventies build fire place, so depending on how old the property is and what the room was used for originally, it might have had a maidens stove fitted, hence the offset fire place, until it’s removed it’s just guess work. Hope this helps.
