Ideas for a whole house cohesive paint/walls scheme?

Hi everyone, I am here looking for some inspiration for the design of our bungalow remodel in Edinburgh, Scotland please! All thoughts very welcome thank you.

It is a single storey house down by a river, so lots of lovely trees seen out of the windows but low light levels as it is in a valley. Pic of new floor plan attached, with the front door and garden view marked up. From the front door, you'll see a long hallway ahead of you with four bedrooms off to the left. Immediately right on entry to the house is the view straight across the open-plan living area/kitchen to the garden. If you turn right you go into the living room. Beyond this is the kitchen and a dining nook with lomg picture window. The bathroom is opposite bedroom 4. There's a cloakroom and store cupboard in the hallway.

It's going to be an open plan space with a view all the way from the front door the full diagonal width of the house to the garden. We're thinking of going for Karndean vinyl tile in blond oak, laid in a herringbone pattern throughout (see my other post!). I'd love a cohesive paint scheme throughout the house, so that rooms feel like they flow into each other. Toning colours, with glass, wood and wicker natural textures as the accessories. I'm loving the Slat-Lite style acoustic wood wall panels look. Also wallpaper, botanical and nature themes. Not necessarily all light colours - I'm not afraid of dark ones too. Little Green slaked lime/Farrow and Ball on a cheaper budget though!

Thanks for the feedback, we had something similar in mind. Would you suggest bringing the door out to the front? What about the windows either side, we would think about replacing maybe in a different colour, possibly grey, and add some cedar cladding to the house front and paint walls grey. We are also toying with the idea of bring double doors out to the front with arclight over head and then to add coving around the windows with arc that mirrors the arc light to try and soften the whole angular look to to the front. Is the chandelier thing seeming a bit small for the room or is it just me? Given that your walls are plain, the sofa is plain how about a patterned rug? Do you like Persian rugs? I find that dark green wainscotting too heavy and would paint it a lighter color. Given you have just moved in I assume you are planning to be there a while. If you like traditional style do you want a fairly safe color scheme re walls and curtains, keeping future resale in mind. Or are u happy to decorate according to your tastes? The mirror seems a bit small to me.

Break down the design issues into smaller pieces: furniture, storage, lighting, decorative elements and accessories. It looks like you have space for one twin but maybe two twin size beds, include a night stand with table lamp, add a tall bookshelf and dresser and a large area rug. There are a zillion wallpapers out there. I like a single, bold pattern on one wall with a matching paint color on the other three walls. Consider a large hanging round paper lantern style instead of the existing overhead light and put it on a dimmer, add a comfy chair so the two of you can read books together at bedtime.

Hello 9woodview, Have a look at Little Greene, They do a fantastic range of chalky paints for walls and woodwork.. Whitening is a gr8 one for ceilings and then there's a whole range of neutral colours to choose from that can add contrast, compliment and look bold and vivid at the same time.. Even with more subtle colours you can still create an impact. They have a few brighter colours that might not spring to mind with the word neutral! Think of the furnishings and accessories like mirrors etc that will also add to it.. Smaller pieces can add a lot to the look and feel of a room.. Once you have decided on a colour scheme.. I would suggest no more than 3 per room and if you want to create a flow between the house you could compliment the colours in slightly different ways or tones throughout.. Adding things to emphasise will help to lift lighter colours.. Consider golds, woods and lovely mirrors or pictures.. :)) http://www.littlegreene.com/paint/colour/neutral-paint
