Hello all

I have been toying with the idea of knocking through from our current kitchen to the adjacent dining room to make a larger kitchen diner.

We have had mixed opinions with it wrecking the style of the property, just wanted to see other peoples opinions.

Do it. We've knocked through in our Edwardian home and it has made the house - no more running around that wall. Just have a ruthless cupboard clear out and you'll be fine without that wall of units (and if you're re-doing the kitchen then you can plan the storage to suit). It honestly won't wreck the style of the property.

Is that a chimney breast in the dining room on the wall you want to remove? If so, it could be a very costly exercise to remove it, especially if it needs to be removed all the way through the house. I don't know too much about it but worth checking with a structural engineer.

    Hi,

You would need to consult a structural engineer before removing a fireplace or chimney stack and surrounding walls. 1 or 2 steel beams would be able to hold the floor and chimney stack above, or the chimney stack could be fully removed on all upper floors. But you could combine the rooms without removing the chimney stack, for cost saving/structural reasons or to keep it as a feature. It would definitely be a good idea to incorporate part of the existing hallway as this only serves to connect to the kitchen anyway. So I have done a couple of quick sketches to show some options for this:

But knocking through the chimney would definitely give you a more flexible and better space to work with, and I don't think it will affect the character of the property! Here is another sketch to show 1 possible layout for this!

Please let me know what you think?

And I wish you all the best with your project!!
