I think the flatness of the cabinets and the prominent grain of oak don't necessarily work well given the disparity in color. I would suggest a warmer wood like walnut that has some tans and darks blended, and a softer grain that would work well with the cabinetry.

Some great advice there! I guess I'm trying to create a comfortable elegant feel/mood to the room. It is a child-free house, so I don't have to worry about little hands marking the fabric, but I do take the point on board - will consider darker fabrics. I do like the eames style chairs, and I will look into them in more detail, although I think I prefer the idea of a soft seat, rather than a hard one. One of my main concerns was in relation to the style/finish of the chair legs.....I love the legs on the table, so I want a chair that will complement the table. Is there any particular style of chair leg I should avoid? Or finish (wooden leg v chrome leg)? Karen: I'd be interested to see which chair you went for! What size dining table to buy

We are building a vacation home which is open concept. The dining table area back wall is 10'7" wide. When facing the dining area there is a half side wall that comes out which is approx 6' that opens to the the living area and another small wall approximately 3' that juts out on the right side. I'm in the process of buying a dining table and want to make sure that there's enough room for chairs to be pushed in and out and access to the back of the table. I love a table that is 88" long but I think it may be too long. Any help would be appreciated.
