Oak staircase in desperate need of update!!

Is there anyone who loves a stain you've used on a refurbished oak staircase? I'm looking for a medium - dark color, but not black. Should I go with medium tone or dark espresso tone? If you have brand names, that would be a huge help :)
Obviously changing the carpet LOL The walls are grey with a very slight green tint, like toward the bottom of the walls (not pink!!)
Also, on the corners of the face of each step there is a wraparound piece. Should that be stained dark or painted white (the color the skirt will be) ?
