Wainscoting .. custom or Home Depot ?.

Silly question .. but the wainscoting was this custom ? Or Home Depot type store?... love your style

I wish someone would post on here, because I have the same problem! I have two really pretty velvet-ish burgundy sofas that look beautiful on their own, but I'm having a hell of a time designing a contemporary-looking room around it. I feel like maroon tends to quickly move toward a 90s discount furniture showroom look despite the fact that it's pretty on its own. Plus, I also have the dark room factor (north-facing room in a small, run-of-the-mill townhome) and not a whole lot of space to work with. Ugg. Anyway, I've been reading up like crazy, so I'll just post my ideas and maybe they'll help you. I want to paint a warmish medium gray on the walls (like Benjamin Moore Reverie Pewter or Feather Gray) and incorporate a strong accent color or two on the wall art and throw pillows (coral, yellow, or bright teal are favorites). As for paint, dark rooms need mid-tones (so I've read), because light colors will feel nonexistent and super dark colors will feel, well, super dark. If your room is dark, it might be worth it to try some Jedi mind tricks with your trim too. I have a chair rail and crown moulding, but I'm thinking of doing wainscoting beneath the chair rail and extending the crown moulding by placing a thin piece of trim about six inches below the moulding and painting the whole thing white. Then gray goes between the chair rail and that bottom crown moulding. I've liked the pictures I've seen with this done in small spaces. (I forget where this attached picture came from, but it shows how the wainscoting can be useful in a small room.) My end and coffee table right now are just black, second-hand placeholders, but I'm going to look for an affordable tufted ottoman and some lighter, more organic end tables. Wicker baskets have seemed to help make the room feel more updated too. So now with that paint scheme, I'm thinking throw pillows in gray and very light linen ikat (which is very chic but still homey), chevron, pale gray zebra, and other contemporary patterns. I found a great throw pillow that had kind of a native American cross stitch in coral and gray tones against a linen background, so I think that would go with the couch. I'm a graphic designer, so I'm going to throw in some subway art and other typographic pieces to modern-up the joint. Also I'm putting a large mirror either on the wall adjacent to the windows or propped in the corner at an angle. If you get a nice one it can look deliberate enough go with the rest of the room. Or, if you're down with slip covers, you can always do that and then paint the walls however the hell you want. A lot of places have them, and upholstery shops can make you a custom one that won't look as sloppy as some of the off-the-rack ones. These are interior doors, right? What if you replaced the glass entirely with a wood shutter that opened and closed, then you wood be able to let light come through when you wanted, and shut them for privacy. It would also look nice. Like this: or

hello bonnielynn75 and THANK YOU! your comment put a smile on my face re the red on the interior side of the door. It IS red on the inside as well, he insisted on that when we purchased it. no one here has it red on the inside and I wanted it to be white on the inside. do you see my dilemma?;) I agree with everything you are saying, I suppose this is the reason why so far I was not 100% sure about the black for the door either, although I like black...Agree, there is too much wall and I find the house to be looking a bit 'bland' and would like to change that. I LOVE shutters, but read somewhere that you never put shutters on wide windows, so got unsure about that, too...but perhaps just the one as I stated earlier. Would the color on that shutter be the same as the door (if I ever settle on a door color)? Unfortunately window boxes are not an option as we have quite a few cats and they may be used as litter boxes;) please don't tell me to get rid of the cats;)... Regarding the stoop (entrance) : we need to add another step (made of cement) on top of the existing step: it was removed when the new door was fitted. We were thinking of putting slate tiles or something dark to match the roof, if that makes any sense.... It is porous cement so unsuitable for painting, I think. What place in Ireland did you visit, we are close to the Irish Sea in the country surrounded by sheep;)...

If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. Such a rug is an investment and may take longer than three weeks to find.
