Help choosing colour for stair wall!

Hi, am looking for advice and possibly reassurance?! I’m trying to add colour to my home as currently very neutral and our stair wall is very bland. I’m looking to paint it in farrow and ball Parma Gray (and possibly the hand rail in down pipe?). Do you think those colours will work? Am worried the blue might look too ‘twee’ or sickly - although that may be because I’m new to using colour! am just about to paint a lounge and kitchen wall in de nimes so thought Parma gray would tie in? Any help would be gratefully received! Thanks

Have you had any large prints/artwork/framed photos up? I think that's all it needs. I think that no matter what colour you paint those walls it will still need some kind of artwork to make it not "bland" as you say.

I think Parma Grey will work well on the walls. Personally I’m not a lover of dark colour especially in restricted light places so would be wary of Downpipe for the handrail, but having said that it contrasts well against the Parma Grey and contrasts better than white.

If your rooms have doors on then I don’t see the need for a constant flow of colour. Sometimes it’s nice to have something different in different rooms.

Just be wary on having too much of the same colour as it produces a mono look throughout the house and then you find yourself looking for something to break that up.

Your tile looks like it might have a bit of a soft gray/olive green in it so I'd go with a light olive green. Here are some color ideas as the page you posted isn't big enough for me to really see the colors.

Benjamin Moore has a color called Gray Cashmere. It is a perfect compliment for the red tiles. Has some blue, some green and gray undertones.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Not knowing much about the rest of your home or your personal style, I might suggest you paint a soft color like Sherwin WIlliams Sea Salt.

Thank you so much for your comments. I am looking to put some large artwork up as well, not chosen them yet but seen few pieces in John Lewis but still need to work out how many and how big! Think I might hold off on hand rail until I’ve lived with it a bit as worried it would be too dark as very little light in the staircase. Just want it to feel more homely and warm but worried Parma gray may be a bit cold.

I like the colour you have, a shade of taupe? It just needs dressing with wall art. I think the handrail painted in railings would look good and you could also paint the other side too, the bit that is white? It would create contrast. King & McGaw online are very good for art and they have a much bigger selection than John Lewis. Etsy are very good for affordable art.

Agree with Sonia, sometimes styling the space will give you a new perspective. I have been debating adding colour to my hall stairs and landing for 7 years. I finally decided to go with adding framed pics with the odd bit of colour. Still work in progress but it totally changed to look and feel of the space.

It’s hard to tell how much light you have in the space. One of your pictures looks much darker than the other. Personally I’d keep your walls fairly neutral and light and let the colour flow from your other rooms. Keeping a neutral that ties it all together and as you and others suggest, wall art will help liven the space up. I had Parma Grey in my bathroom which is north east facing (so potential to look cold) ... it’s a reasonable size for a bathroom and has a generous window. I didn’t find the colour cold but definitely much stronger than the image you’ve posted. I loved it for quite a while but was very happy when I finally changed it! With less light it will look even more intense. Here’s a pic of bathroom mid Reno when Parma gray was still there!

Thanks everyone, really helpful! The walls downstairs are currently ammonite and it is quite dark as no real natural light. Maybe first step is to look for wall art first and put that up. I had thought of a colllage of photos etc. but I find lots of small pics a bit claustrophobic on stairs so think maybe I just go for 2 or 3 large art prints as the thought of changing the colour does scare me slightly but didn’t know whether to push myself out of my comfort zone. Thanks Janet_allen8 for the pic of the colour - it does look stronger than I thought for a full wall.

I do like the idea of painting the hand rail if I stick with the current wall colour - not sure if I could do it on the other side though. Thanks everyone, really appreciate your comments as am a first time post-er on here!!!
