Ammonite is from the Yellow Hue Family and Down Pipe from the Blue-Green Hue Family.

The two colours could work very well together as a Diad harmony.

Note though, that Ammonite is a changeling of a colour. In a balanced quality of light it appears to most people as a near neutral grey colour. In imbalanced light it may have moments of greenness and possibly even hint a blue-ish cast. This doesn’t happen in every situation.

Test in your space at the angle it will be viewed, just so you know how it’s likely to render in your son’s space. You may like it in all potential moods, but you don’t want surprises.

A other alternative to consider with Down Pipe is Borrowed Light. It is very close in Value (lightness/darkness) to Ammonite but is from the Blue-Green Hue Family, like Down Pipe.

P.s. I would consider Ammonite also for the long, low window + radiator walls & then up and over onto the ceiling. Keeping Down Pipe for the door and far end wall.

Sweeping one colour up and over the ceiling from the low walls blurs the impact of the low walls and angled roof line.

Thank you Marylee for that information. I will get some tester pots and try them out.. I like the idea of putting the colour over side walls and ceiling in one colour but would lose the idea of a dark room as there would not be much down pipe then. Any advice on that?

I think if you are feeling brave and your son has his heart set on a dark room, then flip it!

Take the Down Pipe up and over the ceiling. It might feel too dark for most, but a kid might find it feels more den-like. It would certainly feel more of a cocoon of a space, as opposed to light and airy. Lighting choices in the evening would be more powerful against the darkness.

On the wall opposite the door wall, you could even introduce a bold pattern wallpaper for an extra shot of drama?

Or,,,match the carpet to the Down Pipe end walls. So,

2 x dark walls + floor

2 x light walls + ceiling

I think it might work that way. The velux windows bring in lots of light and iv put a white double bed in there and plan to put light colour led bedding. The other wall is not straight and has the entrance door. Them 2 doors you see are just small rooms. One to be turned into an ensuite. Thanks very much for your help
