Can you paint stairs around a runner?

Moved into our house last year and the previous owners had added a very nice carpet runner up the stairs with white paint either side. We don't want to lose or remove this carpet as it looks relatively new. But we're repainting the walls and want to refresh the skirting boards and door frames with new white paint, and unless we hit on exactly the right shade of white, that means repainting the stairs either side of the runner too. How can I do this neatly without removing the runner?!
