Starting from scratch

Hi there,

I am starting to plan a renovation for my house. This is so far outside of my comfort zone, I already feel rather stressed just thinking about it.

What is the best way to plan it & budget it? Are there any idiot renovation processes I can follow?

Specifically I'm looking to do the following:

- Convert attic

- Re-do bathroom

- Extend kitchen to meet dining room (there's a bit of a damp problem I think in the dining room walls)

- Improve heating/insulation

- Replace bay windows upstairs and downstairs

- I'm not sure if the roof needs any work

- Re-decorate whole place

It's a mid-terrace house.

Just a small list so! Ideally I would like to have a project manager but I don't think I can afford one.

Any and all ideas/advice gratefully received!

Thanks for all the feedback. I think I'm going to shove the expense and go for full shelves as I will be renting. Cut costs by using mdf sadly alot of messes happen coz I can't be there and have no van to buy materials myself. My wardrobe doors turned out messed up as had a circular route instead of straight lines so they're new but dated. I can't afford it but I'll definitely put up a few eccentric ideas on how to hide it and will look forward to the feedback from that! Thanks

This is going to almost have to be an eclectic mix...which can work. I would cover the glass doors with curtains or roll-up shades/blinds for sure, on the living room side. Could be sheer or gauze type material. Or even roman shades in a patterned fabric. I would then find a very large ornate mirror to go over the fireplace. You could either distress one yourself, or probably find one that is already distressed. To be quite honest, the wallpaper you have on the fireplace wall looks like it could work as is. Not exactly sure what the color is...(bad computer monitor). Get one or two overstuffed slipcovered chairs with skirts. Get some throw pillows that are in the same color range as those to use on leather couch. Maybe a thick floral rug and one of those industrial bin carts for a coffee table. Go antiquing and junk store shopping...find old flower vases or ornate silver pitchers and fill them with flowers.

not alot happening at the moment, its winter! alotta rain, lotta. but i am bedding down to get this over with and maybe in the spring the spirits will rise once more. i hope so. i would love to feel i was doing something to keep my hopes and dreams alive, i dont see what i can do until the spring. when i bring the topic up, especially to those that moved away and came down this neck of the woods, they say they had friends who felt it was too far too and moved back home. i guess thats how i feel, thats what i want and i just want to be a bit more uplifted, i think rain dampens down things a bit!!! santa Ma Margaret!
