kitchen paint and wallpaper

Hi everyone , I really need your advise ..
I have attached the pictures of my kitchen where we have newly moved .. it looks really tired to me ..so I just want to give it fresh colour of paint and new wallpaper ....
Don't know where to start but I m on a very tight budget ..and will be doing the paint and paper job myself...
please if you can suggest what colour I could go for the walls and if I will be able to paint over the laminate cupboards..or just leave them as it is ...
On the wall opposite the dining table I was thinking of putting up the wall paper ..bug again don't know where to start....

Your advise and ideas will be immensely appreciated.

Hi Sonika, I think grey units and pink walls would look amazing. You can paint anything nowadays, just research to ensure you get the right primer and paint. Tiles can be painted but I’ve no idea how good it is though. Or how about covering the tiles with mdf panelling? Not sure if that would be a step too far for you, but it would look nice!

I agree painting the cupboards will freshen it up a treat. It will be time consuming but not difficult and you could add new handles, although if budget is tight, the ones you have will be fine. Are there any colours you love? Do you want bright, light units or dark and moody? Do you like a modern country look or more contemporary? The end wall by the dining table could be wallpapered, but even easier is to paint it a deeper hue such navy, stone or green. Wall colour will, I think, depend on whether you paint the units. I must say your grey and white tablecloth could be a starting point, it is lovely! Here’s a few colour ideas:

I was thinking is it going to possible to colour the cupboards as they are laminate ?? If it is , then i would love to paint and choose the wall color accordingly ...

I do like the first pic as well where we can paint the cupboards grey and probably keep the walls as bright white ...

The only thing is that as you can see in my pics the kitchen backsplash colour dont think will go with grey and I am not intending to change that for now ..

I don't understand, if you have wallpaper up, what are you painting? Is this a focal wall and you need paint for the other walls? How much natural light does the room get, because my first thought would be charcoal gray paint. You could also go with white, light gray or it looks like there's a bit of gold in the paper?

I think that better colors would be gray (more or less light, depending on how large is your room) or white. Other colors that match with a mix of black and white would be strong colors as red or green, but I think they are too colorfully to pain living walls. In my opinion the best one is white, although it sounds banal, but it would emphasize your wallpaper and wouldn't condicionate the rest of the decoration.

I'd look for something that looks great with the irisses in the windows, the colors at least. Something Art Nouveau or Art Deco, botanical, floral. Metallic silver/beige will reflect lots of light. But I would leave the low stairs' walls (rail) as they are (painted offwhite) and only paper on the high wall leading up and the wall without stairs (opposite side). If the wall is in good shape, no need for complete paneling, just use a chair rail and paper the part above it. Or do you want planks/panels to show?

You can paint the the lot. The laminate and tiles. A paint shop will help you with the right product. It's a type of primer and you paint the final colour on top.
And from experience take the cupboard doors off and a mini roller worked well for me. The paint will be soft for maybe a week so you just need to be gentle with it until it hardens up.

If I’m honest I think the tiles are the think that date your kitchen the most ... I’m not sure what they would look like painted (I’ve never done it)? To try and tie then in with a more modern scheme you like, as I agree any cupboard colour would need to match them otherwise. Definitely possible to paint the cupboards with the right sealant - but it will be time consuming as said above. If they’re not great quality maybe just paint the walls and save up for a new kitchen in a few years...?

Hi Sonika,

Might I suggest a re-skin for your kitchen? We renovate kitchens with an ultra durable architectural vinyl to a luxury standard.

It’s far cheaper than a new kitchen and saves your time and labour painting and priming everything!

We can even re-skin the tiles! :)

hi minnie, by patterned I think I made it very confusing..sorry..I meant that because they have a brown tile in between which sort of gives it a pattern..that is making it difficult for me to choose the blinds ...

Oh ok! I think you can have anything in terms of pattern, just try picking up some of the colours. Maybe something like this orla Keilly multi stem?
