Small Irish kitchen needs a facelift
Comments (4)I would paint the cupboards using either annie Sloan or little greene paint. Annie sloan paint means no prep work so is quick and easy. LG is expensive but fantastic quality. Personally I would go for grey to update the kitchen. If you can I would remove the architrave/beading at the bottom of the cupboards.I would re-tile with metro tiles which you can get for £15-20 sqm. These shouldn't date and should tie in with whatever you choose when you can get the kitchen re-fitted. If you can remove the remainder of the tiles yourself it will be cheaper than having the tiler to do it. I would redo the floor with vinyl. This is easy to pick up at £10-15 sqm and presumably your floor is hard boarded already as you have Lino so this should be a cheap fix. I would also remove the hanging utensil rail and put up some vintage or industriał artwork to make it more modern. I would just paint the walls white to keep it fresh and easy to maintain as kitchens get dirty....See Morefloor tiles
Comments (4)Hi @mjdpower, My suggestion is to go to a couple of floor specialist and ask as they may come up with something different. Whatever you do keep in consideration the size of the room and think on a long term: a poor quality finish could effect your property price in a space as important as the kitchen. I will try something that allow you to go back to your original tiles floor if things do not work out the way you want them to go. A cheap way is to cover the tiles with vinyl and here is how to do it: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-install-vinyl-flooring-over-ceramic-tiling#b the adhesive should not stain or damage the tiles (ask the manufacture before doing it anyway!) and you have a large choice of design and colours. Paint tiles could be another option, not my favourite but an option. I found this blog where Curry Kay describe step by step how she's did it. It's American USA but it will give you an idea to start with. https://currykay.wordpress.com/2011/03/01/powder-room-brand-new-floor-painting-tile-tutorial/comment-page-1/ Be aware that the kitchen is a high usage room so the paint will take a good bashing and may wear off. Plus the final look on a large surface like the kitchen area could be not as good as on a splash back or smaller vertical surface. I hope it helps! Have fun!...See Moreback splash/ tiling
Comments (12)Don't be swerved away from hand painted tiles! The best way to add colour and originality (I make hand painted tiles so I may be biased). I would take the tiles to just under the bottom shelf, and up to the hod. We have had tiles behind our cooker for 21 years, and we don't find the grout staying clean a problem. By the way - I think subway tiles will look dated in a few years, as anything bang on trend tends to do....See MoreKitchen Makeover
Comments (0)I have just bought my first home and have had 3 jobs done so far. I have felt totally overwhelmed and unprepared for the questions I was asked and decisions I had to make, so hoping I can get some advice before the nest job! I am single without anyone who I can really ask for help so apologies if these are stupid questions! Kitchen Makeover; the kitchen is fine but not to my taste. I want to remove the wall units and put in shelves, remove the wall tiles and re-tile, lay new floor, spray the cabinets, replace the counter tops and sink. The thing is I don't know what order to do it in. My guess: Remove wall units Re-tile/paint Respray cabinets Replace counter tops & sink Lay floor If anyone can let me know if I am on the right track that would be great. Thank you!...See MoreIcon Building Group
