Oh dear, difficult to judge without seeing the tile, some tiles are difficult to work with. I think it could look worse once it is grouted depending on the colour grout you have in mind, if you are going to try and match it to the tile then it might not be so bad, but a different colour grout will probably make it more obvious.

I think maybe he hasn't had the skills to do the job and instead of admitting this he has carried on and done a bad job.

Strictly speaking you should get him to put it right. Maybe he can re-lay areas that are bad ? It is probably not going to be possible to remove tiles without breaking them so if you need more tiles to put it right he probably should pay for them yes, but it is never easy getting payment out of workmen for this sort of thing.

google search the tile and see if there are any other reviews about them being bent/twisted, if so you can maybe get the tile company to replace the ones that you need to, but you can't just take him at his word because he may just not know what he's doing.

I wouldn't get him to put it right, he got it so wrong in the first place. I really feel your pain and have been there. How did you find him? Was he recommended by a bathroom company? You need to do some research on the tiles and the tiler. Grouting will possibly make it much more obvious, the only way it can help is to grout the dame colour. What is the name of the tiles?

Thanks for the replies!! He’ll have to take them off and start again. The grouting was grey..here are the tiles we were trying to copy the herringbone image.

I just don’t see why he couldn’t use spacers. He’s a plumber he’s organised our whole renovation and I think he underquoted and couldn’t afford a tiler. I’m really stressed about the whole thing. We’ve no budget left.

Firstly I would see if there are any tiles left over to see if they are indeed misshapen- if they are then you might make different decisions about where to attribute blame. I would point out that a small tile has to be really badly misshapen to make a difference to the look (its more noticeable on big tiles).
It’s unfortunate that the strategy by trades often seems to get finished to get paid without considering the implication of a poor finish.
Personally I would want him to take a pass at the areas that are the worst, especially around the window where I would want the tile trim to be mitered.
I would then put a very light grout to help disguise any minor imperfections. Personally I think this will be a lot more bearable when grouted but you must tackle the worst bits first.

Thanks for all the advice it’s been really helpful. He’s not answering our calls but we’ve been to the house to find the bad ones from the window have been removed and all the floor. He’s left one wall but a few are sticking out lots and not flush so it’s not perfect. Any idea if this can be rectified by removing individual tiles? Or is to too late. The wall probably wasn’t the most even but we were not advised it would look like this! Thanks

So taking off individual tiles is an option.
However I would currently be optimistic that this guy thinks he can do better and has started.
I think that you should be seeking an assurance that he can deliver the kind of finish you want before he commits more of his time. It might be that to get a great finish you need to address the tile quality first or you may need to have a wall skimmed or over boarded.

If he's not answering your calls, that would be a red flag for me. You need assurance that he can either do it to the standard you want, or he can get someone else who can.

Agree with every already said. The tile trim doesn’t look like it is the correct size, and it should be mitred.
In one of the photos it isn’t clear what the floor tiles are being laid on- please tell me they aren’t straight on the floorboards?
Herringbone does take a lot more skill than laying them out straight or brick pattern, and this guy wasn’t up to the job and should have been honest up front. I’ve seen people comment that their tilers have had numerous laser lines set up to keep both the verticals and horizontals. I know the cut tiles diminish in size across the top of a section in our kitchen, but my husband did it himself so I can’t grumble too much!

The photos look like the tiles are bonded to what looks to be wall paper?

consider this an an option if you wanted to start again, you can get stick on tiles that you can install yourself. It might sound horrendous but hear me out, as I tested this out in my kitchen as I was terrified of having to tile myself, or run the risk of a job done that I hated, so I found these on Amazon, £20 per roll, 2x rolls did my entire kitchen and no one ever knows the difference. also if you don't like them, peel them off and get a new tile guy in!? food for thought...

Going by the link from the 4/7/18 these tiles are supposed to be laid butting up to each other (no spacers), the grout then only fills in the irregularity between the tiles. When fitting 'hand made' tiles, they have to be done very carefully and with a guide like a string line and experience. What this guy has done is amateurish.
